Is this a pollination problem in Oakland?

  • E30

I have a four year old Bourgassote Gris that has succedded in disapointing me again this year.  Ive got a dozen or so figs on it and they all look like this.

Im guesssing that I have a pollination problem?  Although I've read on the forum that there are polinators in Oakland.

Maybe they're just getting lazy with me or my army of ladybugs is taking them out.

E30,

your fig has the looks of a caprifig..
If it is a caprifig, your eventual pollination problems are over.
What are those black spots seen inside the syconium
Did these figs grow on last year's wood ?? or on current this season branches ?

Hi E30,
Looks like powder inside ... So like pollen.
So your tree is not Bourjassotte grise but a random caprifig or seedling.
You just need to get a new Bourjassotte grise ...

Caprifig.

If this is a Caprifig then I got suckered (or is the term BT'd).  The tree tag and sticker on the pot shows that it came from the Dave Wilson nursery, I paid about $70 for this thing from a legit local reseller.

Francisco: This is growth on last years wood. The dark spots are either shadows or pedicels that apear to be rippening or getting spoiled near the peduncle. All of the figs on the tree are like this. It did the same last year on brebba and new wood. I thought it was just shock from up-potting.  Here is a link to higher resolution pictures:

E30  Thank you
OK.. The fact that the fruit shows up on last years wood confirms it as being a Profichi carrying wasps and pollen for caprification of San Pedro and Smyrna figs
This means you may enlarge your capabilities to ripen great smyrna  and sanPedro main crop figs although I understand that some fellows may not be interested
But nothing is lost.. You may also provide others with late Caprifigs and make some bucks to pay nice parthenocarpic varieties or do trades, etc.. Sorry for this happening but I see that tree and its fruit as an asset on any fig collector.

Francisco, I had no idea. Thank you for the lesson!

I wont yank it out of the ground after all. This will pair well with my young Zidi which I think is a smyrna.

parthenocarpic, profici... I'm getting a new level of education here on advanced level fig collecting.

E30
the fact that you have capri figs does not automatically
mean they contain wasps,  i have many large capris
that do not have wasps.
you will need to introduce them to your tree.

OTOH I'd go back to the store and get your money back.  Unidentified caprifigs are a dime a dozen in CA.  I'd love cuttings when it goes dormant  :)

Fascinating!

I'm in east Oakland, and am very curious to see if you attract wasps.

Dave Wilson doesn't show that variety on their site.
