--- Is this a true St. Rita?

Thanks, Alan. That is what I wanted to find out.

hm... it surely looks like my Sultani figs, small, black with a little stem and red inside. sweet as hell. Is there a connection?

Hi,
They don't look like my former "Sultane" . My figs were more long than round but still small and dark.
Sofar, "Sultane" is the only cultivar I have tasted that did fruit after a big die-back (2011) ... Before being killed in Feb. 2012 .
I bought a new one this year... Hopefully I'll get some next figs next year but maybe not ...
The seller should show photos of the tree. That helps to know if his cultivar is a big or small grower.
"Sultane" is supposed to be a big grower, not suited for small gardens ... But I still wanted to have one as those figs have an incredible taste .

excellent fig. wish i have more.

edit: i'll be propagating like crazy on this one and Niagara Black.

sounds like ronde de bordeaux!

rdB:
dark, small to medium size, early ripening main crop, strong berry flavor, actually only main crop but in some years a few brebas, strong grower/big tree(not mentioned for st.rita)

anyone grows both?

I have both. The leaves are entirely different from one another. Both are very good-tasting figs.

St. Rita and RdB are not same, they are not even from same are. St. Rita is from italy, RdB is from france. they also taste different. they are both great figs. i just prefer St. Rita over RdB right now. things might change as they mature. to me, St. Rita has brighter taste.

Seller is legit. He's on the forum.

Charles

not all the sellers on this forum is legit. anyone can join this forum and use its name. the seller is legit in this case since he introduced this fig to this forum, and the fig happened to be a very good one.

Thanks everyone for your input! I do not have the St.Rita yet but intend to obtain it.
That might be my New Year's gift :)

How long has St. Rita been in the U.S?

Thanks

These figs definitely looks like the Sultani figs from Persia that I have. I don't have pics right now but come the spring and summer...

Nice! Maybe your Sultani is the same as my Sultane fig. I also got the St. Rita so we could compare all tree!

Hi, ok then my "sutane" is not your "sultani" :)
"Sultane" has black skinned figs.

i haven't heard of "Sutane". but if you meant Sultane, i doubt they are the same. St. Rite is a small fig. Sultane is medium to large in size. the fig does look similar, other than in size. didn't pay too much attention on St. Rita to tell if the leaves are same/similar. maybe they are related.

Pete,
I am sure many figs are related and the St.Rita and Sultane maybe similar. I will wait in my case until September when there will be something to compare.
The same with the Maltese Falcon and Black Mission. Many people described the MF as almost like the improved BM.

My Sultani had black skin too, not red .

Pete, when it comes a name like Sultani, I'd take Persian guy's word over Indonesian. It's just my instinct. :)

Sultane is a known variety that's been around for awhile. i go by data on known databases. unless we are calling some new fig a "Sultane". encanto farm, baud and others have all given description on Sultane.

Ok, I mistipped the name, but still I was referring to "sultane" with an "L".
Here goes a photo of my former "Sultane".
For me it was my smallest fig, but very tasty, and that is the reason why, I have a new "Sultane" in ground.

The photos on the link I saw seem to show figs with more green parts in the fruit - my ones were full black as the one in the forefront in my photo.

that is a good looking fig. i heard Sultane is a good fig. haven't had urge to look for one yet. some named figs from france do look wonderful, like Hative de Argenteuil, Noire de Caromb and others.

from the Sultane grown around my area, Sultane does not look like the St. Rita. mainly St. Rita is rather small fig like the pix on encanto farm db. Sultane is larger than St. Rita. once someone grows them side by side, more answers will come. i would have imagine more experience members would have chimed in if St. Rita was Sultane.
