Is this luck or what???

Or perhaps I just dont' know what I'm doing, which is certainly the case.  I'm a person who likes plants, and decided to try and grow plants in my home that I've read about in the Bible.

I've tried planting olive seeds from ebay purchases, not much luck in a couple of years, only 2 trees have come up and only one very small one is surviving.  I also planted seeds from pomegranates and dates which are doing well.

I've started fig trees from cuttings which were given to me, gave one tree to my Pastor for his office (he confessed the staff didn't water it in his 2 weeks absence.....) and I have one at home.  Mine at home dropped all the leaves, but I kept watering it.  A new tree has sprouted along side the bare trunk.

I'm so excited, or should I be???  I'm not interested in the fruit, just having Biblical plants in my home.  I guess I should get books from the library and study.

Your post mentions a number of things. Which part of your post you are asking about if luck or prophecied?

newfignut,

You know, There is a plant called THE BURNING BUSH ( LOL )!

I think it's a great idea to have plants from the Bible. But if you want to save yourself from the headaches and grief then I would just buy the plant rather than starting it from the seed.

In my opinion, I really don't think you are saving too much money by starting them from seeds. I'm assuming this is why your doing this and forgive me if that's not your intent.

There are many nurseries out there that can sell you what your are looking for at very reasonable prices.

Check on ebay, you might find all that you are looking for from the same seller and that could save you a bundle on shipping cost.

As for luck goes, I guess you are talking about the little figlet growing from the side of your tree? I think that's great and it should do well.

A lot of the plants from the Bible are not zoned for your area. You might find other items that are cold hardy. He changed water into wine. Grapes are cold hardy. The birds & squirrels would love to eat them if you do not pick the fruit. Apple trees are cold hardy too. Figs are not cold hardy in my zone. I have read a lot of threads on this forum on how to care for my potted fig. My VdB is asleep in the basement now. I'm will to do all of this work so the plant will reward me with the sweet tasty fruit. Give it time, you will see the rewards of growing a fig is the fruit of your labor.

Have you put your fig near a southern window now that it has woken up? Maybe a growing lamp??

Newfignut,  Figs are not hardy in most of the zones we grow them in exceptions for people in the South and California ect, but you can still grow them provided you give them the shelter and care they need.  This would apply to other plants you are interested in growing. If you are trying to grow plants from the bible, then of course figs and other Mediterranean plants would be what you want. I wouldn't like to substitute cold hardy plants for bibbio plants because they are not the same. Yes grapes are good, but if you want to grow Pomegranate and Olives thats okay. you want an ornamental which is good, not necessarily to fruit.  All these plants are relatively easy to grow in these less hardy conditions, I grow them here in Pa. I had much luck with pomegranate and olives of course.  You just need to bring them in and care for them as well you would do for your fig trees.  I gave my pomegranates away and sort of regret it, but I'll get some more soon.  I'll send you some Olive branches when I return from ITaly. I leave on 27 Dicember and won't be back till the middle January.  Email me at Mediterraneanflora@gmail.com and I'll send you some Olive branches from my Olive trees when I return to USA. Send me your address. No need to worry about price, I'll just give them to you.  I don't have much time to root them, so I took them down off website, but you can do it very much as we stick branches in the ground in Italy to propogate them. My Olive trees make a beautiful display in their large pots, people around here never even seen a live Olive tree, they are beautiful, plus if you have success with them, you can pass them down about ten generations to your offspring or family!!! They live for a VERY long time.  Good luck, I find you venture with bible plants very interesting. Email me privately please.
Ciao
P.S.  Also, I would get in touch with Bass who has alot of trees especially from the Middle East area ( Eastern Mediterranean).

OttawanZ5,

I was referring to the fact that the small tree appeared beside the "stalk" as being luck.  Perhaps that would happen anyway.  I live in Ohio, and had the original tree in a pot on the front porch during our warmer weather, took it inside when it got cold.  That's when the leaves fell off one by one.

rafed,

I use seeds because I like watching the pots and seeing the small plants come forth.  Must be the science teacher in me. ;-).  It's not about the money at all.  I did start (or attempted) olive seeds I'd gotten from ebay.  Did so in my classroom.  I remember when one seedling sprouted last December, the students noticed before me and were so excited.  I ended up giving that small tree to one of the ministers who visited my sister who was in a coma at the time.  He had gone to pray for her, she woke up an hour later, my brother was at the hospital and told me time....it was the same time the student noticed the olive seed had sprouted!!  So, I have Pastor Dan that seedling.  Sadly, my sister passed on Jan 5th 2009, but, I take comfort knowing she is in a much better place.

nhardy,

The fig and figlet (I love that word) is sitting in a westward.  That's the best window I have.  There is a pole lamp nearby that I could put a grow bulb into, thanks for the suggestion.

Italiangirl74,

Thanks for the reply.  I need to look for your website.  I know I am such an amature (sp?) and is doing this for simple joy.  I've always loved plants, even as a child.  My mother was amazed at it.  I tried to plant everything.  I give plants away, sometimes to my middle school students, if I'm confident they will take care of them.    I will email you privately.

Thank you everyone who replied or even read this post.  I'm glad I found this forum, spent alot of time reading and just recently submitted something.  Everyone enjoy your holidays!!

newfignut,

Sorry about your sister and yes, She is in a better place.
I lost my only sister almost 21 years ago at the age of 29 to Cancer.
She left behind four young kids.

Where in Ohio are you?
I can send you some seeds for your class.
I would be happy to replace the fig tree your pastor lost ( in Spring ).

send me an email: r.kinaia@comcast.net
