Go to page 2 on the forum and look at the second picture of the thread "Violette de Bordeaux". Do you see how the fig is hanging straight down? That is what you want, you don't have to let it get as wrinkled as that one(which is super ripe), but who knows you may prefer them that way.
Chances are at some point you will run out of patience, eat it, and think man that was good but I should have waited a couple more days ;)
