Is this ripe

This Hardy Chicago was started as a one node broken off piece that happened during shipping.
So from starting the rooting process in late April I finally have my first real live fig fruit.

It started to swell up four days ago (Thursday) and I don't want to pick it too early. It has drooped on the stem a bit and the skin is starting to get fine wrinkles here and there.

How much longer should I wait?

Definitely need more color, IMO. However, lack of color could be due to growing conditions, such as being indoors out of direct sunlight.

Hi Sam,
Don't pick it yet! It has a ways to go, it will get darker and alot softer. It will also droop/hang downwards.

Yes, the side of the fig that is purple is facing the window.

This fig is about 105 days old from when it was a wee embryo in September.
I'll let it hang on the tree a little longer.

Once picked I'll take a picture of the inside of it.

Hardy Chicago gets the hangmans neck for optimum flavor its worth waiting for.
It will hang straight down in your case as the leaf stem is off to its side i see in your picture.
With it in its way it will bend over it, need pictures just ask .

Go to page 2 on the forum and look at the second picture of the thread "Violette de Bordeaux". Do you see how the fig is hanging straight down? That is what you want, you don't have to let it get as wrinkled as that one(which is super ripe), but who knows you may prefer them that way.

Chances are at some point you will run out of patience, eat it, and think man that was good but I should have waited a couple more days ;)

Enjoy!

Definitely give it more time to ripen.  Let it hang straight down before you pick it.  Also, Hardy Chicago are best when very ripe (maybe even overripe, if there is such a thing). I'm sure it's tempting to pick it, but you've invested this much time, so let it get really ripe.  It's worth the wait.  There's a pic of a very ripe one (already picked) here:

Mike

Hi everyone.
Thanks for all your help and pictures.
I split this little fig between me and two of my kids. It was a nice treat. Now I'm thinking I could have waited another day. Where could I have heard that before?

In my hurry to take a picture of the cut open fig I dropped my camera and it bounced and landed on one of the fig halves. Now my camera won't focus at all but the memory is still intact. So I had my daughter take the picture of the opened fig with her ipod.
That's alright, it gives me an excuse for getting a better camera.

Here are the photos I promised.
