Hey, I recently found this pine bark mulch at Home Depot. I was wondering if it will work like pine bark fines and be good for growing figs in containers. Has anyone had experience with this product? It looks pretty good through the bag. If it's a bit to big I plan on mixing in some miricale gro garden soil to lighten and and more nutrients to it. Also does it have anything that can be harmful like pesticides? All info is good thanks.

They have pine bark compost & is what i use. Look for pine bark compost and compair the,two. They are probably the same thing. Works very well.

Oh okay thank you I looks really good in the bag very fine and well textured but i dont know if there's harmful things in it that's what I'm most worried about.

I use this exact brand to root and grow all of my cuttings and plants. I usually mix 60% Pine Bark Mulch 40% peat/potting mix/compost in any combination. This brand of PBM is very fine and it is about the best that I have come across. I have purchased it from WalMart but not all stores carry it all the time. It costs around $3 a 2 cu ft bag and it goes a long ways.

It drains water very fast so watch it doesn't dry out for extended periods of time

Okay thanks fig pig gotta come up with an irrigation system for vacations now thanks for your Information. I'm goign to ad some miricale grow garden soil to bulk it up and have it hold more water.

I think Rich and I use different pine bark mulch. This mulch is very fine and holds water very well, especially with a 60/40 mixture that I described above. I have about 400-3 gallon pots of 2 year fig trees that I water twice a week and they haven't dried out yet.

I used that exact kind too, but I did have to screen it with a 1/4 screen (which was actually a wired garbage can lol) & so far so good. I'm new like you are, so I'm glad others are saying they have used it too :)
Also I mixed in 1 part spaghnum peat moss, 1 part perlite, and 1 part coir just because I had it on hand. It seems to stay moist but not overly wet. Good luck!

I have found with bark (experience with orchids- just transplanted 5 this weekend) that if you put it in a bucket and let it soak over night with warm water it will help the bark accept water. Otherwise its just a pain to keep watering the container, because the bark will just repel the water. Even after soaking the bark will dry-out quickly at first but it wont be as bad as straight out of the bag.  

Great post!! I'm learning a lot! Wondering about the pine bark...i read others prefer this also but why this & not other bark? Is it the acidity level?
