Please provide your comments if the system described at the following URL is good enough for rooting of fig cuttings:http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=1&p=10559&cat=2,44713,40757&ap=1 I know it does not have a dome or a heating pad but those can be arranged separately. What could be the positive or negative aspects of this system when used for rooting fig cuttings (besides other uses as described by Lee Valley). One reason I like the system is that the Lee Valley store is in the neighbourhood. Also, it is compact and the description says it air-prunes the roots (? I don't see holes!). The cells are 5" deep and 1.5" side square. Is 5" deep enough for rooting fig cuttings? And will the growing soil not split if one opens the cell to see the rooting progress? -----------------
Seedlings slide out easily, avoiding damage to the root system and associated transplant shock. Similar to seed starters used in commercial nurseries. Cells are 5" deep by 1-1/2" square.
Each kit is made up of one 14-1/4" x 8-1/4" frame (requiring minor assembly) and eight four-cell books (for a total of 32 growing cells). Instructions included.
Made in Canada.
I would want a larger volume container, if possible, and you definitely still need an enclosure to keep humidity up. The issue is still the rooting media and moisture control in the rooting zone. But it should work.
