Is this variety any good? - Sure looks good

These figs sure look good, but my wife is up for me buying them because she worries about the birds getting them all.   But they sure look fantastic, my mouth is watering just looking @ them.  Does anyone know how they taste?

If you win the auction,
it comes with a freebie....

A visit from the USDA
to confiscate your purchase.
Big brother is watching.

:-)

That's not right!  The lord giveth and the government taketh away?  Oh well,  maybe they'll let me keep the picture. :)

pictures are ok !

you can search on this site about others
getting a visit from "the man" for purchases made off ebay
from overseas.

Guess it's a good thing that I'm  just starting out and found this forum,  but man,  those figs sure looked good.  Must be getting cabin fever waiting for spring.  I don't get the  weather that you get up in new york but it was wet the last few days.

Funny story, I got raided a number of years ago by the SBI for growing current bushes.  Turns out they have the  same thermal signature as mary jane.  Got them through Gurneys.  After getting raided Gurneys no longer sold them to North Carolina.

Many times, I have considered bringing in currants and/or gooseberries from another state. Unfortunately, both fruits are banned in NC. It has to do with a pathogen that harms the pine trees. It's too bad, as I love currants. But lumber is a big business here, so culinary preferences lose out. In the end, it is just not worth it to buy or import something illegal. Such things are noticed. We are watched.

I had those in my watch list for a while but never got around to trying them because I could get a good sized speciment of one I don't have locally for that price. They do look great though.

hungryjack: as usual, you NY dry humor cracks me up, but yes, Turkey is off limit, bummers.
I'm not even sure weather Scarecrow is from US or not. He removed his location from his profile, bad news, LOL

Aaron4USA -  I'm in the us in Durham, NC. as listed in a previous post.   I have not removed the location from my profile, I just have not added it.  Guess it goes back to network security and the NSA.  There's a saying, "What happens on the web, stays on the web..... Usually for ever."  I do not use face book or most other  forms of network social media.  I know that I cannot control all the information  but I try to be mindful of it.  Maybe I'm old fashioned  but I'm getting there.  I don't know if that is some kind of deal breaker or not but in all honesty does a listing of some ones location really ensure that the person is indeed from there?

You hot an point there Scarecrow... but know one thing, you are already too late protecting identity. The big brother knows it all about every body. Sad and frastrating I know.. but its a sore fact.
Coming back to what you wanting.... have you tried UCDavis suppository ?

I have submitted  a request with UCDavis but I think I may be late for this year as I read that the cutoff was Nov. 2nd for cuttings.  Also the site was rather confussing and something I read said that they were only there to support labs and businesses doing studies.  I do not know if the procedure that I followed was  right and I do not know if I will need to request again next year prior to Nov. 2nd  I got an automatic email response  but that was it  What is the procedure for home gardeners or has the system changed?

I saw those last night and added then to my wish list. I was looking earlier at the negronne variety which appears to be much larger. Thanks for the information, I think I'll watch this and see how much this addiction of mine is going to cost me. :-)

To avoid the risk of purchasing plants material from abroad I choose this option from the left side of the page on ebay;

item Location

Worldwide

This does not mean you will be getting 100% US only results. But it reduces the foreign results. So use caution before bidding and ALWAYS double check the item location.
I have been told on several occasions by different people that ebay tips off the USDA after the purchase has been completed.

You could be caught up and get all excited in the process and not know you made an illegal purchase.

Good luck

Thanks for the info. Used it in the past, did not think to this time. I also use this because I have attached pp account to a limited bal. Credit card. The card really dings me with fees associated with out of the country purchases.

Sorry Aaron;)

Wills, you noticed that too!
I wasn't gonna say anything, Heheh!

Wills - you beat me to it :)

Rafed,

You do have a point:)

brian,

Negronne/VdB does well in durham, as long as there isn't too much rain. 2013 was nasty. we had too much rain and most of the figs didn't taste too good. but if you are looking for VdB cuttings, let me know. i'm usually tied up with scouting and kid's activities, but i can let you know where the troop meeting is and if you drop by i can give you some cuttings.

i can also give you some Kathleen's Black cuttings. i'm doing major pruning this yr and should have enough for everyone i have promised. also if you are interested in Paradiso Gene, let me know. first 2-3 yr will be hard for this Paradiso Gene. however, once it hits 4th yr, it doesn't explode like in previous yrs.

my other trees are too young for cuttings. will need 1-2 more yrs for good size cutting to make it worth rooting. best time to root here is late march. that way, once it's rooted and has decent top, you can leave outside  when the night temp is above 50. usually around mid april.

PM me if  you are interested. i don't sell things, so there is no cost. it either give away the cuttings, root some more for myself.. for hitting the garbage can.

Pete,
I would like that very much. I could also bring you some cuttings and if you like some blue berry plants. The variety of fig that I have may/may not be a type of celestes. Also have the less desirable (i guess) brown turkey and Texas overbearing if interested. I find all thee varieties taste good to me.

brian,

i'll be pruning my tree in few weeks. i do need to send some of the cuttings out to the members i promised the cuttings. i'll PM you when i'm pruning them and will let you know where our troop meets.

i would love some Celeste cuttings. there are good number of Celeste around, but if yours does well in durham, that would be a plus. blue berry would be nice. i never grew anything other than figs. and figs are easy.
