Is winter over????

I took a walk in the yard yesterday to checked on my trees. I'm wanting to prune some and take cuttings but this is what I found. Instead of dormant plants, I found my trees look like Spring is here. The weather "experts" say that we will have a dry and warmer winter this year in the South.

Paradiso, I took cuttings off the tree at the end of November when it looked dormant. A couple of week later it had new sprouts growing which got burnt by the frost. Now more new growth next to the one hit by the frost.

Here's my LSU Goldl showing buds and breba swelling.

J H Adriatic, it still has figs one of which I was going to eat yesterday on the 1st but a bird got to it first. I did get a little taste and it was good, sweet and tasty.

Gene. I've also heard that we're supposed to have a milder winter this season.

Couldn't tell it from today's conditions though. It's 32F at 10:am and is supposed to go down to 18F tonight. Can't complain too much though since this will be our coldest overnight low so far this winter.

What is winter? Supposed to be close to 80F today, in paradise. You can check it out with the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl coverage.

Is winter over?

Hi Gene i wish it was in our area as here January is our coldest month .

23f as i type this message at 11:03 am central time which isn't too bad....lol

Gene,

Winter is OVER here in sterling Heights, Mi.

Gene
Winter has just begun here in Northern Ohio off Lake Eire.
Eighteen inches of snow expected by the afternoon of Jan. 3.

Rafed,
We all wish that winter will be over soon...
Do not get too cozy!
One does not know what nature will be throwing at us between now and (say) April.
I think that here in NJ, real winter is just starting up late (low mid-teens *F tomorrow)...

My trees are not as green as yours here in SW Louisiana, but the tips of the branches don't really look dormant.   We had a few freezes then  if has stayed warm..  I guess the trees think the winter is over. It seems they would be subject to freeze damage if we get some real cold weather.

George,

What I meant was that it is over here, as in here and not in San Diego like it will be soon.

Gene,

We had near 80F weather this past week.  We had a cold spell come in, but our low is only supposed to be 34F.  I've removed the barrels, but they are still close by.  January and February are normally the cold months here.

None of my trees look like they are wanting to break dormancy, and some show evidence of cold damage (despite my efforts).  It's kind of cool, 'Aldo' is still dormant but has a sucker coming from the ground.

Winter has not started in full here yet. Two days ago though, it was lingering up and down between 4F and -6F over a 24 hour period. Since I don't have any plants outside in the open, I could ignore the temperatures with wind-chill effect between -8F and -22F outside. The good side effect was that the skating rink in the back yard (for grand-children) is solid frozen now and will stay like this until mid-March. There has to be some benefit from cold winter!
The real winter here is expected to happen from mid-January to mid-February. I hope it will be milder so I would not need a second heater in the uninsulated garage that can trip the circuit-breaker during the night and freeze the plants.
I hope there is a good spring and warm summer after this.

Yes, we do get ripe figs here...

Rafed, I was going to ask if you had been outside in the past couple days.  here in SCS its cold enough that I have finally started wearing my coat (not my heavy one, yet, though).

This next spring we've got to plan a meeting (I know, I know)

I hear that they have been able to "reboot" winter for you, and you should now have one.

Hey Jon. I thought that felt like a reboot. I was happier with the 'glitch' we were having.

Jon it did get to 34 this morning but the plans are for 70 by Friday again. James we haven't had any 80's but mid 70's feels like summer.

Well, Winter finally arrived here in Tampa last night.  It got down to 27f. However, like yourself Gene, it's suppose to get back to the mid to high 70's by Friday.

I heard snow in Michigan.

Was 19f this morning in my area. Heard it as 22f in the Florida panhandle. Hey JD, are you trees covered? Thought about you when I heard the forecast from Bob van Dillen.

Ya, I guess the western part of Michigan got hammered. Nothing to bragg about here where I live. Getting bored here, I see why Jon wants some snow.

I brought my figs in when we had 7F the other night and then I put them outside so they won't break dormancy but the buds really have been green since fall.  Now I want to bring them in the cellar for the cooler temps in there.  I'm looking at 59.8 F and its 2pm.  Probably will top 60 F today.  OH, My aching back!  They better reward me with some great figs this year.  I really have to build a shed.

It got over 60 today.  I was wearing short sleeves.  We literally went from an afternoon high of 37 three days ago to 73 today.

That's crazy.  sinuses are killing me.

So far winter has been mild in Pacific North West. Mostly rain & some cold mornings like 28*F that warms by 10am. Most of my trees in pots that are 10 gallons or more are left outside. Mountains are packed with snow and many have avalanche warnings on "high risks". As long as the snow is in the mountains, I am happy. I rather opt for rain than snow.

As i age i shutter at the thought of winter here but im lucky in regards i do not have to do the fig shuffle in winter and only in spring.

Dennis,
Fig trees were covered. Got down to 19 followed by 23 with frost last week. More than the frost, the cold temps hammered my pineapple and in-ground avocado. Now the temps are back to ranging from 50 to 75 degrees.

When to prune and take cuttings has become blurry...Last year it was much more obvious that it was winter and the trees were dormant. I cannot have 6 foot 7 foot trees so either way, I will be pruning very soon.

Hi Glen,

"Southern Winter" will be hear tomorrow and is heading your way.  Thankfully it has been dumping rain on us since last night.  We are supposed to get 2-4 inches, but that will hardly make a dent in our deficit.  It should provide enough rain to give the trees a big push out of dormancy and into another drought year.
