Hi everyone,Is there anyone that's put these in ground in the whereabouts of zone7A and enjoyed success? It seems like more people on the east are having success with BM once the plant puts a little size on it. Are these all potted however?I have an interesting planting space that would be very rain sheltered in ground but only receive 4-5 hours of sun. I wonder if I should put BM there or in 8 hours sun but no rain protection.I wonder if someone can go through the specific barriers of each of these 3 cultivars so I can try to brainstorm workarounds if possible.
Black Madeira should be planted in the sunniest spot in your yard in order to ripe fruits.6 or 8 hours of sun is not enough for this cultivar,it needs more.If you have an early ripening cultivar in full sun,you can move that one in the semi shade and plant Madeira Black there.
Herman, have you actually planted the Black Maderia in the ground? That seems very tempting for me to try if it has survived the winter in ground.
Yes I did,and it grow just fine as long as you do a good Winter protection, like leaves ,chicken wire, tarp in top, etc. The plant stay small and can be Winter protected much easier ,year after year.
That is good news to me, but bad news too I have to find a spot to put it into the ground now.
Good news to me as well! Black Madeira will go in ground sunny spot when it's ready. Thanks for heads up. I love putting figs in the ground where they belong.
Did you ever put the madeira in the ground?
I have BM and IB in the ground here in NVA, winters are generally mild enough if planted in a sunny location
Nice information, thanks for sharing.Best,Tam
Hey Ed, I actually did not. I decided to wait on a Preto to put in ground this spring since I heard it is similar/same but ripens a bit earlier, thought it might fare better in outdoor planting here.
