Pete,

Why knock them off?  Id enjoy them.

The plant is only 3 months old. It would be too much stress. I'll knock them off this year and wait for next yr. I have 3 Ischia White plants. They are all putting out figs. All UCD cuttings.

Slingha,

It is a common and good practice with the newly rooted cuttings. During the first year you want to return all the energy given to the figs back to the roots.
Clipping the first leaf or two ( after you have about five ) wouldn't hurt either.

You might consider this next year with your cuttings.

I purchased something  labeled Ischia from a nursery in Florida. It's quite small. We won't have fruit for a few years. Are the leaves of Green, White and Black Ischia distinct enough to be determinative of the variety?

My leafed-out Lina bare-root Celeste that I bought and planted a month ago are starting to form fruit. They are 3 ft tall trees. Should I take the fruit off?

I do understand what you are saying about growth. My first ever fig trees bought this year, 3 hardy Chicago trees, are growing at different rates. I have one that has 6 figs on it but it is pretty much the same size it was when I bought it. My second one grew like a weed, but oddly stopdead about 2 weeks ago. I now see figs forming on it. The 3rd one will be figless but it towers over the other 2. Since they are my first trees and I wanted to taste a fresh gig I'm letting them go as is. I'm hopefuls the fruitful one will catch up next year

I left some fruit on the first with a couple trees, any fruit that did ripen tasted so so, I have trees that aren't quite 2 years old until march and I left everything on that formed about 3-4 weeks ago and I'm knocking everything else off, some of these trees have 5-20 figs on them all around 2/3 the size of a golf ball.  I pinched my trees and they are growing well again so I am thinking that the fruit that I left on, the tree should be able to handle without putting undue stress on them or am I just being ever hopeful?

just noticed Black Madeira is also forming figs.. that one is going to be a dilema.. let it grow and get a taste in before they die on me? or wait till next year.. hmm..

I just knocked a fig off of a very small Gino's Black cutting.  Another member gave me this rooted cutting a few weeks ago... it has just a couple of leaves (2) and maybe a total of 2" of stem growth, and it made a fig!  I knocked it off... I want the tree to grow roots and top growth so it gets some size to it. I was amazed that it made a fig after having only 2 leaves!

And Pete, (regarding the Black Madeira)... I'd say no dilemma there.  Knock that fig off... it won't be a representative taste if that's a new tree from a cutting this year.  I'd say knock them off, and go for it on getting the tree to mature.  Optimism... you can get that tree to survive!  Just my two cents...  :-)
