It is winter here

nhardy, you are making me feel good with what we have now. I have bad memories of freezing rain dated back to January 8 1998 when Ottawa and Eastern Ontario was hit by an ice storm in the form of persistent freezing rain that coated everything with thick black ice. Tree branches were coated with 1/2" to 1" thick coatings and were falling like a clock work every few minutes with cracking sounds. High tension transmission towers caved in, power-lines and phone lines were torn apart. We lost power to our house for a week and were the last one in the area to be reconnected because our power line got ripped from the main switch in the basement. Since then I don't like freezing rain in January and February.

Hi nhardy,

Stay warm and safe.  That sounds like a mean storm.

I guess this story is not going to go away till Spring time so I thought I would add this picture I took this morning.

This is on I-80 in Wyoming, Between Laramie and Rawlins, in high ( very high ) elevation.
As you can see the blowing snow ( 45 mph gusts ) making the road a little slick.

You forgot to add something.

Sorry Martin,

Had made a correction and didn't realize that the picture went away.

It's fixed

I'm thinking that groundhog might be right this time. Spring is on the way. Got to 40F today. The most of the sleet melted on the front lawn.  I can now see the brown grass dotted with sweet gum balls. They are calling for temps in the 60s by mid week. Almost shorts weather. I guess I'm itching to start all of my veggie & flower seeds.

Nice shot Rafed , i noticed i can see behind as well by gazing into your truck mirror.
Its gonna hit 40s late next week but weather man said back downhill again as good ole fresh air from Canada will sink back down upon the midwest afterwards.

Still have about 17 inches of snow to melt thehni can get ready to do some needed root pruning of some trees.
But cant till snow melts for i have now where to put the mess afterwards.

Hi Rafed,

That's a really neat picture taken from the cab of your truck.

Vivian

Hey Rafed

Tell me that ain't no Radar detector stuck on your windshield!!!!! HEHEHE

Cecil,

Many things have changed since you retired.

Some good and many bad. This industry is not what it used to be.

This thing on the windshield is my trusted GPS.
Only I trust it 70% of the time. Got to use common sense 100% of the time.

The last close call I got out of it was a few weeks ago in Hamilton, Ontario. Low Bridge, Had to back up about 1/4 mile.
You know the warning signs, You don't see them till you get there sometimes.

Vivian,
Thanks for the compliment

Rafed,

Deep down I knew it couldn't be a radar detector cause they would be illegal in your 18 wheeler...HEHE

And yes there have been many changes in the Trucking Ind. since I started in the mid 50's

It's winter in San Diego, but we do it different here. 77F today, clear, and all of the fig trees are showing leaves.

Here is the next 10 day forcast for around here, It ain't San Diego, but it ain't bad.

February should look like this:

Conadria 02-11-2011

I agree Jon.
Unfortunately it looks like this minus a few inches due to it now melting.

Old man winter is losing his grip big time this week even in Canada. His funeral is near and your fig trees will soon awaken.   I think the worst is over but old man winter may have one more assult and then fade away.

Jon can taste fresh Shtawi and Cecil can take his one year old plants out for fresh air and light but winter here is not going anywhere yet !

FLASH FREEZE WARNING IN EFFECT IN OTTAWA
A rare occurrence is taking place in the area with temperatures plunging from +3C to -19C within a few hours with wind gusts driving the temperatures down to -26C. Poor fig plants would have been toast if they were outside in the open.
My lonely Chicago Hardy in the open, but scantily protected, will not be a good test of hardiness (unless it survives) because I was unable to complete protection when snow covered everything in the fall. I will report if the roots survive under heavy maple leaves much. If it survives it may take good part of the summer for shoots to appear.

.

Ottawan,

That is terrible news!  Maybe soon you will start to having better weather!

THINK POSITIVE

Yes, terrible in many ways. Flash freeze causes black ice on the roads and in the streets. Black ice causes many broken bones (falling) and many fender benders (hopefully not more serious than that), PLUS extra property tax for the city budget (& that will leave less money for the figs) since the city news just mentioned "Nearly 400 city vehicles fanned out across the city to spread salt and gravel over Ottawa's 2,758 square km of city roads."
The streets will be done after the roads are finished.

Dog gone it c'mon spring

Heavy Snow

Snow. Snow will be heavy at times this evening. Low 27F. Winds NNE at 15 to 25 mph. 4 to 6 inches of snow expected.

Martin,

You must show restraint! You cannot show this dude in San Diego your weakness! You must hang tough and tell the snow to bring it on and let's dance!

Our weather man says you have two more hits coming. Nasty.
