Italian 258

My favorite so far this year. A 10 out of 10. Reminded me of Preto and Maltese Beauty but those two are no where near ripening.

Cheers

Thanks for sharing, that rating and information is what I really wanted to hear from this fig. Did you start it early in a green house or the likes, or was it brought out from storage and shuffled as it broke dormancy in April/May?

A fellow member sent it to me as a gallon pot. Back in May or June. I'm not sure how he started it. This sure might affect it's ripening time next season. That's a very good point to bring up Calvin.

Dan that one's on my wish list. Don't remember why..???  Maybe I copied Greenfig's wish list...LOL    So give us the details, was it sweet, honey like, smokey, berry flavored, melon tasting...????   Use a lot of adjectives...LOL

Thanks for the extra info. :)

Good looking fig. 258 is on my list.

I have a dark Italian unk ( Franks Salerno unk) that I started from cuttings last fall and it has leaves similar to 258.
Looks like we will get some fruit from it this year.

Fully agree it is a high quality fig. I am keeping tree even though it gives me brebas. So far main
crop have never ripen for me. The brebas are awesome tasting. I heard Italian 395 variant is even
BETTER.

Nice looking fig and such a high rating!

I wonder what the history of this fig?  Such a nice fig deserves better than a number for a name..LOL

Someone else with a better memory can recount the full story, but as I recall, some fellow collected  a whole mangle of figs in Italy and each sample was numbered and cross-referenced on a list. When he got back, he discovered that he had lost the list. We're stuck with numbers.

I don't think figs ever really taste like Strawberry jam, but I understand why the comparison is used because it's hard to nail down the taste. So hear it goes on my description of the flavor ......

It tasted like rich sweet strawberry jam.

Great fig. Thanks for the thread and pic.

Sometimes I think my Panache taste very close to strawberry jam while other times they are more acidic and other times less sweet (depending on weather and ripeness, etc.)
