its a bit early but

This is my first year with potted figs. Some are harder to come by like vdb and rdb among many others. So I would have to say my concern is how would I protect them so they don't freeze or have the breba embreos freeze. I do have a greenhouse I could put them in but even in winter with the sun shinning it does get rather warm in there. Night on the other hand it gets really chilly. I have no shed or other out buildings to store them for winter.

Martin I know. You live a few hours north of me and grow all your figs potted.

Any advice would be great. I also will be protecting my inground trees so I might get to taste some brebas.

put them in tne garage. or unheated basement.. or attic..

Pete unfortunatly I have no gradge, basement or attic

Depending on how many pots you have, you may want to build a small shelter with plywood, then insulate the trees with blankets, tarps, etc.  Just an idea.

dave.. hmm.. that can be a problem. the idea of container culture is to move them into sheltered location during the winter to protect them. but if you don't have place to protect them.. you said you have a green house. how about, keeping the temp cold in there with vent open?

You have to put into greenhouse!!! I keep all my figs in greenhouse,no problem.

I have a little 8X6 greenhouse and this litttle gizmo worked great during freezes last winter.

I used an oil space heater similar to this one plugged into that cube.

 Good luck,  Soni

It comes in several settings,  I used the 35-45 degree one

My greenhouse is a 10x20 200 sq ft. No vents I have doors on both ends one faceing north the other south that I open when its hot to let it cool down. Its amazing how hot it gets in there when the sun is shinning. I was thinking of getting some blace rain drums to fill with water. The ideal being in the sunlight they will heat up and hopfully release small amount of radiant heat through the night. I thought about just burying the pots and wrapping like my inground figs.

Soni,

Any idea what's the longest cord you can use?

Here i use our attached garage, exception is any 1 gallon pot go in attic.
Greenhouse in our yard would have to have a heater on thermostat and for warms days automatic raising vents.
In past stored some in yard wood shed and they went kaput as it gets as cold in our shed as outdoor temps.

Why not cover the greenhouse with a tarp? Then you will have a shed.

I kept some last winter in a friends greenhouse that is more like 30x50. I took them in before frost (the important ones) and then reduced water to stop growth and help them drop their leaves. After they were dormant I put them back out in Nov to go fully dormant, then back in before temps were below 25 at night. Opening the doors on *most* hot days to keep the temps down. In late Feb when it was warmer they went back outside and began getting repotted. I was happy with the results and only lost one, which was a young airlayer that died because I left the door open on accident overnight so all of the pots froze, oh well.

Another option that is not often discussed is to dig a 5ft deep pit and put them in there, cover with plywood and a tarp. I think it was Herman2 who used to do that but not sure...
