For some history: I've discussed this tree here. and offered cuttings for trade here.
What I didn't mention (I don't think), was that I had tried to do some air layers on it last October before he sold the house. I knew it was late in the season, but worth a try to see if they would root before the cold set it. You never know in Texas.
I set 7 air layers. Some with Dip N' Grow, some without. wrapped in plastic and then foil for about 4 weeks. I think they were a little too wet though. None of them really turned out. I cut them all off the day before our first freeze. 4 had no roots at all, 3 had 1 to 3 very thin pitiful roots. I stuck those 3 into 2 gal pots, watered lightly, put them against a wall in the garage and promptly forgot about them.
I had occasionally looked at them and the all had dry little burrs (leaf stems) where I had pinched off all the leaves when I "planted" them.
Fast Forward to about 2 weeks ago. I was out in the garage watering some other trees I had out there under lights. I noticed the 3 sticks in the 2 gal pots and decided to see what they were saying. First one seemed very loose in the soil. Gave it a very light twist and there was no resistance at all. Same thing with the second one. The 3rd seemed a little firmer and resisted the twist. I didn't try to force it. I thought "hmmm.." and promptly forgot them again.
Today, i was opening a new 4cu/ft back of perlite, which was sitting right next to the 2 gal pots. After a casual glance over, my eyes nearly popped out.
There was a Breba staring back at me! There's a few buds opening on it too. And it seems firmly attached to the root ball. I'll be moving it out to my greenhouse in a few days, once the leaves make a showing.
Fig trees never cease to amaze me. Between this, and my other trees looking like they're waking up.. and my RdB's seems to finally be putting out roots... this has been a VERY GOOD DAY!
