It's been a while - Is there any hope?

Hi all!  I know I have been AWOL for quite some time.  The usual stuff has been happening - x10!

The puppy is great!!  When of the best things I have ever done!!!  We have been through 3 training courses at our local Petco and she is just a dream come true - she has really helped me keep things together.  I failed crate training, and she pretty much house broke herself lol.  She had lots of accidents but it was due to me not being there and paying attention.  Oh well, just grateful for Urine Destroyer!  I should have purchased stock in it lol lol.

Back in August, I opened my home to a friend who was being displaced from living with another friend.  When she started talking about moving into her storage unit, I had to do something.  Talked it over with my SO and we opened our home to her.  I had to clean out a room and put things in storage for "only a couple of months" - well the stuff is still there!  It has been too cold to go there and figure it out.

I had great plans of making a killing with a garage sale until the SO went into the hospital with pneumonia and was there for a week!!!  The garage sale was a bust ($50!!!) but it did keep my mind off things and I also met a few neighbors.

The SO went in again about a week later and was released after a few days with oxygen - great.

Mom came again this year - 10 days!!!  We had a great time, did a little shopping, took a couple of painting classes, cooked and I broke out my pictures from years ago - High school and other family stuff.

Having my friend move in has been a true blessing.  She has been there for emotional support, helping with the puppy and the SO.  It's amazing how you don't know what you need until you get it!

So that's been the last 7 months or so, now for figs.  Is there any hope??  I am truly embarrassed to say I have cuttings in the fridge fro last year :0!!!!!!  I never got to root my family tree cuttings either!  I have all of the cuttings I bought from Jon (still in the mailing package :(  ) and there is an assortment of cuttings I had traded for. Is there a good chance they will root??

Hopefully I can come here a bit more often - I miss everyone!

I'll bite and ask, what'a a SO?

Welcome back, glad you're back.

hey joann,

good to see you again on the forum. Unk JoAnn's Purple is doing great down here in NC. let me know if you need cuttings. i know i have some that i can cut off the trees. just not sure what they are, but i know they are not BT or Celeste :)

 Hi JoAnn,
I must have joined f4f  just about when you went AWOL.  It looks like you've had some major distractions, to say the least.
I hope your cuttings make it and you can enjoy your plants again.  They're a much better type  distraction.
Just thinking back,  one of my rescue dogs has a THING for chewing fig saplings. I have to solve that problem before I start
planting them in ground or I'll have a very short fig orchard.

Welcome back, JoAnn!

Hope everything is starting to look up for you now.  I don't have any cuttings that are on your wish list, but I'll be glad to share some other cuttings with you.  Just let me know.

James

PS.  As long as your cuttings in the fridge haven't molded, you should have no problem with them.  I've rooted year old cuttings without any problems.

Hi JoAnn.

"Storing" cuttings for a year or more is something I have plenty of experience at! When you get the chance to take them out of the fridge for examination, this will tell you a lot about the state they're in. If they weren't stored with damp paper of any kind around them (damp paper makes them decompose faster) , and they haven't rotted away yet, you should at least give them a try.

I had recently posted in a thread on some Italian Honey cuttings that I'd had in my fridge since 2009. I got some of them to root for me last winter (can't find that thread right now). It's actually a long-term experiment I have going to test storing cuttings for long periods of time. I still have a few of those cuttings in my fridge. I'll take out a couple of them this year to see if they have any viability left in them.

So, many of your cuttings should still be alright. Certainly wouldn't hurt to pull them out and treat them as if they are fresh cuttings taken today. I wish you the best on them & may you make many nice little fig trees out of them ;-) .

If you need any new cuttings just let us know. I'm sure many of us would be happy to help you out, including myself.

Well looks who's back!  Welcome back Joann!  We missed you!  Sounds like "life" is happening to you like the rest of us!

Glad you're back!

Welcome back Jo-Ann!  I was MIA for a year too, but mostly because of moving and all that goes into remodeling a home and seriously neglected acreage!  I wish I had all the lovely figs I lost to fungus gnats because now I have room for them to grow.  I'll start over along with you!

Happy someone asked about SO!  ???  Got it!

I'm glad your puppy has given you so much joy and that you were able to help out a friend.  Sweet!

Hey!  It's raining today in Southern California!  I love it!  Glad to have you back.

Whoa!  You guys have a life outside of figs?  Good to see you again.

In my novice opinion, I would say that as long as they look intact, there is always hope. I had some cuttings that I tried to root for at least 3 months until I gave up and threw them in the rubbish pile in my potting area. Several months later, I went to clean up the rubbish and some of those cuttings that I had tossed out were growing! They were in cups with perlite/vermiculite and I hadn't given them any water for months. Taught me to never give up too soon.

What they said.  Go for it!  Welcome back!

Welcome back JoAnn.
There is always hope.

A very welcome back JA!

Hello JoAnn ;)

Joann glad to see you come around again. Give the cuttings a try. If they don't make it'll be time to rewrite a new Wish List ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome backs!!

I have checked on the cuttings occasionally and they looked good a couple of months ago, so i will give them a try.  Last year I jumped the gun and didn't have a plan for them.  I didn't do nearly as many as some others on the forum but I was still in a cutting overload predicament - no room and it is still winter!!

I think I will wait a few more weeks, come up with a plan, I still have to clean the garden and of course prune the tree in ground.

It is LSU Purple and will offer cuttings if anyone is interested.  I don't think I need to trade at this time, so I will offer them for shipping and packaging.  I will post it when I'm ready.  In the mean time anyone can PM me if they are interested.

Welcome back, JoAnn!  As you can see, there's a new crop of figgers perpetuating the forum. Some of the oldies are still around, though.

Welcome back Jo-Ann !! Life does happen ! Been out for a bit myself - had a 4 day stint in the hospital , but I'm great now!
As some of the others have said, I'm also thinking your cuttings will be ok if wrapped properly and haven't molded or dried out.
So glad you are back !!

Welcome back, Pattee!  Glad you're better.

Welcome back from me too.  As a few others have said:  as long as they aren't moldy or rotting, there's a good chance.  Go for it.  I've rooted a few that were over a year old, and even a couple that were over 2 years old.  Storing without damp/wet seems to help a lot with that.  It's worth noting that somewhere on Jon's how-to pages (I think), he gave that advice for storing in the fridge.  (But I've even had some year old ones root that were stored with damp paper towel... some of those got moldy and some didn't, whereas none of the ones without damp paper towel got moldy).  And as others also said:  give 'em a try.

Glad you'e back.

Mike
