It's frosty! Brrrrr...

Well I woke up to an unexpected surprise this morning. It rained last night, a good thing, but this morning it was 27 degrees and frosty outside. I went to check on my unprotected figs. Most have gone dormant but there are a couple holdouts. I stuck my finger into the soil to test it or at least I tried...the soil in all my pots are frozen. I'm thinking this is nothing to worry about? At least I hope so. I'd hate to loose 2 years work over one night's freeze. It's supposed to be that cold again tonight...I'll throw a tarp or something over them tonight just in case.

If they're fully dormant they'll be okay with 27°. The potted trees in my garage froze a few times and they all survived, expect for one tiny tree. I hope you're not watering at this time of year.

Thanks Bass. I didn't think they would be hurt by this temp but have my fingers crossed.
I'm not watering them but it did rain last night and all my plants are outside in 'Sunny" Calif. so they did get 'watered'.

Sue
I hope your plants survive and most probably they will.
How much I wish I could wake up to 27F or 25F with frost and NOT to this  -2F all the time with snow to be cleaned. Only snow mounds or only deep freeze would have been much tolerable. The two together cause real suffering when stretched over a few months. But then the thoughts of a sunny day in early summer with fig plants sprouting makes one push along.

Merry Christmas, Sue.

I was 39F last night - our coldest night this year, and maybe one or two more to come this week, and that may well be the coldest weather of the year.

If they are in pots, you might move them to a slightly warmer spot (maybe in you cargo container) for a few nights.

Sue i think they will be ok hopeully of course this is coming from someone in a cold climate  ; )
We had a few below zero temps and high of late are in the 20s. Several inches of snow as of late.  Last night we also had rain which was supposed to freeze the roads a bit so i drove the misses to work as she does not care for that type of weather as she carpools but her friend took off. So of i went early this morning roads were not to bad drive about 30 miles 1 way came home 1 mile near the house them slid right thru the intersection in her 4 wheel drive jeep luckily no one was out that time of morning. Anyhoot if your figs are anything like mine a little chill like that will be ok but like Jon said you might want to give them a bit more shelter.
Merry Christmas

Thanks Martin,

I did throw a tarp over the smaller 1 gal/first year pots and take it off in the early morning. I was just surprised to find the pot's soil frozen solid...not used to that concept. :-)

Happy New Year everyone,

Sue
