It's SNOWING ON MY BABIES....

Think they are going to be O.K.?


The weather is 40 now with a low of  34 overnight.

And then warming up in the next few days.

I am going to try to bring as many as possible in.

The smaller, younger ones are already inside.

I have the opposite problem. Near 100F last week, and now I have trees breaking dormancy or reflushing with new leavest (some for the 3rd time this season).

If anything,
That little snow should act as insulation ( for the most part ). The leaves will be history but the plants will be fine.

It's not the snow we have to worry about, It is the cold and cold wind.

Sort of an igloo affect.

First season growing fig trees, and Brooklyn gets the most snowfall ever in
October in recorded history.

My small ones are ok, the bigger ones I thought I had more time to bring in.

Some have gotten so large, I need to prune or creativity tie up to get them back thur
the roof window.

I have heard of the Igloo effect Rafed, I am keeping my fingers crossed that's gonna
help the trees out.

But after just seeing Herman's thread I am not to sure now..

This Early snow can bring long period of frost,all of a sudden,and damage my trees very bad.
Fig trees have to get used to cold ,slowly by having a little short period of frost each morning,and so they will harden off.
Tonight it could be that all night is frosty due to snow today.
The leaves and stem are green so,I worry.

Hi, I am new growing my fig tree and I live in Queens and was hoping you could help me out because I had the same snow issue as you. But I went out there and covered mine up while it was snowing with a towel and a garbage bag just to hopefully keep them semi safe and have since uncovered it. My leaves are now starting to turn black and fall off but I was curious when I should cover and uncover it. It is not even a year old but its pretty big (appx. 3 feet high) but skinny because I did the air layering form another tree and I had a pretty big shoot when I put it in the pot with small roots, it seems to be healthy and did good durring the summer. I have burlap and a blue tarp to cover it with I dont have any where to move it inside do you guys think this will work out ok? Its in half a wine barrel. Any other tips or advice or rules of thumb would be appreciated

Firstly, welcome to the forum!

I'm not an expert, But I think your tree has started going dormant from your description of the leaves.

I think you should keep it covered, ( to be on the safer side, add an old blanket between the two layers ) but make certain, there is a little venting area on
the tarp to allow built-up humidity to escape.- leave the top a little open and stick a bucket/pail over it.

Give it a small amount of water once a month and you should be fine for the winter.

No Figs on the XIL this year.
