It's time to propagate some cuttings!

Here is how I root cuttings in Fall. Started 10/9/2015. Inside this clones are Napoleta Negra and Grise d'Olivette. Should ready to pot up on the 29th.

Dennis, I will be following this attentively.

Nice system looks good

Hi Dennis,
With all your experience, what is your opinion of the EZ Cloner

Yes i would like to know about this system

Guys, rooting fig cuttings in an EZ cloner is old news. Here is a thread I started last year on the exact same subject. It works with about 99% success rate depending on the freshness of the cuttings. See my thread below.

Looking good, Dennis

Wow, Great system! I am learning so much about figs & fig trees just in the few days I have been a member on this forum. I must say that it really is unique here. So much wisdom!

for fig will the roots are raising inside the water or outside water for the best propagating?

Thanks.

Regards,

Eddy

Eddy, the cuttings are not in the water.  They're about an inch or 2 above the water.  The water is airated.  There are about 8 or 10 mini sprayers that spray water above and drips back down to the water.  Today, I think all 12 cuttings have roots.  It takes about 20 days to remove the cuttings.  There will be a mop of roots that will reach the water.  As long as the water is moving and gets air, the cuttings will continue to grow.

Great system, this will be my first year ill be trying to root in the winter.  great system.   looking forward to the progress

How about the temperature of water.. i heard it will be hot until 80-90 celcius degree because the pump processing... is that correct?

Also, others on this forum created something similar to this called a mister or bubble.  Gloria created one and had great success rooting cuttings.  She has a post here as well on how she created one.  Can't find it at the moment.  But the fresher the cutting the more success you will have.

Dennis, I see that you said the success rate is extremely high depending on the freshness of the cuttings.  Is that true even if the cuttings are dormant when going into the cloner? In other words, will propagation of fresh dormant cuttings in a cloner be as successful? Thanks!

Yes.  I rooted 8 Nero 600m dormant cuttings that had been in the fridge for a few weeks.  They were not originally cleaned and were starting to mold.  I was getting ready to cull them because at that time I had nothing but bad results trying to get those cuttings to root.  I scrubbed them in anti-bacteria Dawn using a soft toothbrush---let them dry.  Then I placed them in the cloner.  All 8 rooted.  Mold started again on one cutting.  I just left it alone.  The cutting leafed out and the mold part just dried up and fell off.  Today, I have 7 healthy Nero 600m fig trees.  I had 8 but gave one away at the fig festival in August.

Pencil size cuttings seem to root the best and fastest.  Larger cuttings will root but takes longer.

Well, thanks for that information! This will make life easier this winter.

will this system running for 24 hour?

Alan, they are in the fridge with others that need to be started.  Right now, I got too many trees that I must sell off first.

Eddy my system does run for 24hrs inside my garage which is around 60 degrees inside.  The water does get warm but not hot.  The big EZcloners are the best IMHO.  The more water mass the cooler the water will be.  If folks are concerned about the pump heating up, then get yourself one of those AC multi-switch with built in timers.  I have 3 of them.  One is connected to my pump and one side is connected to my T5 lights.  One plug stays on continuous--this is where the pump is connected.  The other goes to my lights.  The lights come on at 7Am and go off at 6PM.  It pretty cool!  The timer can be controlled in 15 minute intervals.  All  I have to do is set it and forget it!  But I do add 1/4 cup of hydrogen Peroxide every 3 days.

I know EZ Cloners are expensive but if you have a prize cutting that you really need propagated, EZ Cloner works without a doubt.  The best thing I like about it is no gnats!

UPDATE, looks like all cuttings will root. All have little white roots. Here is a pic. Cuttings started 2 weeks ago today.

Nice

Well done Dennis! :)

Dennis.. Do you think it's possible to build an EZ cloner yourself? I'm kind of a DIY kinda girl whenever possible.. Especially since its often DIY or cant do at all bc of the cost There are so many great ideas on this forum (including this now), & too little cash in my pocket book.. Seems to be a re-occurring theme for me as of late lol! Especially since I caught this fig fever sickness.. Lol! Anyway thank you for sharing.. Me likey a lot! :)

Yes you can Jamie! I built one. Here are pics of the one I built.
