I've had a delve into the well thumbed previous posts concerning the Izmir fig. Anybody got any info on this one?

I will most likely pick up one or two this year, then I can tell you more ;)

Yes, that was all the information I could find about it.

Forum member kkk2210 was singing its praises late last year.  He may be one of the few that have first hand experience with the characteristics of its fruit.

Doug,

Hello mate. Forgot my name already!! LOL. Anyway did you mange to get one to ripe?.

Kelo,

This variety was introduced by Horticulturist and Nurseryman Kiril Donov and thought to be the best tasting fig in his collection. He acquired this variety from Izmir, Turkey.

This is what he got to say about this variety (Translated from Bulgarian).

"This is the fig tree which in my collection still holds the championship for the most delicious fruit. Anyone who has tried, remained fascinated by it.
The fruit has a soft rind and eat right it is not necessary to peel. The meat is tender, sweet, extremely pleasant and balanced taste.

This variety got it from 2000-2001, brought it from Turkey. I was told that it is the Izmir variety, so I called it Izmir. It is possible that this variety have other, more popular name, but I do not know.
For me freeze to the ground in the cold winter the 2005/2006. After a cold February 2012, frostbite to about 1.5 meters above the ground, but a full recovery and well-cropping season in 2012.

The trees of this variety are characterised by exceptionally luxuriant growth, develop huge, thick and tall branches. The main crown and stem form a significant pruning. As we age and fruiting, growth becomes a little more moderate.
Each fig variety of delicious fruits, the fruits of this also attacked by birds and beetles.

So far, most delicious of my fig varieties are Izmir and Hardy Yellow. But the yellow has a rough skin of the fruit is better to peel, so put first Izmir. Yellow also needs pollination, while in Izmir fruits are always the same".

So far mine hasn't fruited, however I gave it an early start this year and got some fruits on my tree. I will post an update when its ready.l

Cheers,

OK, excellent, Vinny, thank you.
