Jerusalem Fig

Hi Guys and Gals,

This is me with my Jerusalem fig tree. This year it produced 10 figs and I have picked a few already. They are ver y nice tasting and sweet.
Now, I want to cut it back.
But, I'm not sure if I cut it back too far it will now produce next year.
I was thinking of cutting it back to where my hand is.

Nice tree, please post a picture of the inside of the fig. Thanks.

What's the name of this variety?

It's called a Jerusalem fig.

If you are only getting brebas and no main crop and you want figs for next year then I would not do too much cutting. Maybe pinching the tips and get some lower growth. What do the experienced growers think?? Now if you are getting main crop and don't care about brebas, then cut away.

So are these brebas then, and not the main fruit? I want the main fruit.

Buster,
Brebas grow on last year's wood whereas the main crop figs (as a general rule) grow on new growth.
So what waynea is telling you is solid advice. You will have to determine if they are brebas or not but it is pretty late in the year for brebas.
But I should point out that I do not know this fig and am just assuming it's a carica fig.

Thanks guys!
These are not brebas, the fruit looks like it's on new growth.
I will cut it back some but not a lot.
Just to even it out on top, also do I can start some cuttings to give go the neighbours.

What zone are you Jerry?

wait till dormant before removing any branches. you don't want any new tender growth, and your first frost is right around the corner. The cuttings can be stored in the fridge wrapped in shrink wrap or plastic food wrap until spring if wrapped airtight. don't use bags with damp paper towels or newspaper or they will rot. Come spring you can attempt rooting the cuttings for your friends. Good luck.

Thank you to all for your kind replies.

Jerry
