JF&E black Madiera ( not)

I don't know how many of you folks got the Just Fruits & Exotics black Madiera when it was offered, ( and was early determined to actually not be the true BM by leaf identification) but it is still an awesome fig! I have tasted over forty of my own varieties this season, but this fig ( whatever it is) is definitely one of my early faves. It has that same rich, syrupy goodness that the true black Madiera has, but it is a little fruitier and lighter flavored. It is definitely a keeper.

It is smaller than the true BM and hasn't leaked honey out of the eye that I've noticed so far. It probably has a good 50 figs on this tree. It is only in its second year of production. I got it two years ago. Last year it was also very good, but I only had three figs off of it. I wanted to wait until the second year, when I had a larger sample size, before I mentioned anything about its the forum, but it is definitely noteworthy. It may be my favorite dark fig this year! I know Nick and Dennis have it and maybe they'll weigh in as well. After sampling lattarolla, dark Greek, Gino's black, rdb, MBVS, and O'Rourke today, this one definitely topped the list. Here are a few pics.

That does look like a good fig. And it does look a lot like BM to me.

Bill if this is the same tree I bought from you earlier in the year at landis valley it is a vigorous grower. Sadly no Figs this year :( Hopefully next year :)

Does anyone know what their source of this fig is? I wonder if it is another dark fig from Madeira.

Johnny,

Yes it is, so I hope it does well for you!

Steve,

That was Brandy's response- that it was a black fig and it was from Madiera island, but apparently not THE Black Madiera.

I seen jf&e. Agaist other Bm steains and preferably liked, this one from jyst looks. I talked to the lady that works there few months back and she told me to contact her she,was going to try to get me one but she was, having a big problem rooting more and we spoke awhole about grafting them

Could this and Madeira Island Black that Kk sells be the same?

Hi Bill,

Mine was pretty good last year as well!  I need to check mine, but unfortunately, I broke my ankle shortly after meeting up with you last week, so getting around the orchard is kinda tough right now.

Does it need as high heat as black Madeira to ripen?

Hey Bill, thanks for sharing. The fig looks great.

A couple of ?'s for you. They sort of revolve around the same idea though.

Did you start it early in a greenhouse or similar..or just do the shuffle?

This is where the greenhouse would affect the statement. Do you mean "early fave" as in it's an early ripening fig or as in early in the game but have a fair amount of other varieties to taste yet this season?

Thnks

Hi Calvin,

I have it in a pot and did the shuffle. I didn't have it in a greenhouse this year. It is kind of awesome, though, because it has a somewhat similar black Madiera flavor ( IMO) without having to wait until October/November like the true black Madiera. I have it written down from last year as producing its main crop on August 18. This year it produced the first one on August 10th. I've had about ten since and really like them. I don't know what it truly is, but I really like it!

Ross,

I have KK's Unk Madiera island black as well, but it seems different ( larger) and is much later-October 19th last year. It is a great fig, too. It is very healthy and grows faster than most of my black Madeira (and Preto) trees.

Sounds like a great fig! I have a fig from Portugal I'm hoping ripens soon, but so far still green. it is Craven's Craving. I should have cuttings this winter, if you ever want to trade. Always looking for good figs for my area. Any cuttings even, or trade for other figs. I don't have that many though.

Great looking fig bill, glad others are reviewing it. I was watching nicks videos to see how it would come out, hopefully everyone has a good harvest this year. Love the BM variations!

Yeah, I agree.  I have 2 those Black Maderia Nots.  All 3 of mine produced.  They are very close to the real thing but the figs are smaller.  I think they are the same one that KKs sells from Maderia.  The figs look just them.  Plus my 3 trees are over 4 feet tall where as my real McCoy is still a dwarf tree.

It may not be a true black Madeira, but I know that black Madeira ripens too late and needs too much heat for my growing conditions. The fact that this is earlier ripening may mean it will work for me. If anyone has cuttings available, I would be interested in giving it a try.
