JH Adriatic is awesome!

Tried my first JH Adriatic and it is my new favorite, better than Nordland, Negronne & Stella. Very sweet rich flavor. Absolute must have fig

Peter, very nice

Thanks Mike

I've read lots of good stuff about this one.   My plant is fairly small and has a healthy FMV dose, but I'm sure it will grow better next year.   Thanks for sharing and keeping hope alive.

Thanks Dan, this has been a tough season so tasting this fig was a nice treat.

I agree with all my heart, and is not hyping to admire an undervalued but indeed superior cultivar.
You see in ideal climate many cultivars are exceptionally good, but in bad climatic conditions only a handful, deliver.
Adriatic JH is one of those, few.
The selection of truly valuable ,superior perfprming cultivars, can never be made in Ideal climates like California Central Valley,so the testing grounds there was a mistake from the start.
Selection can only be made in demanding, unsuitable climatic conditions like New Jersey.
Any cultivar that please the Gardener in NJ,will be havenly good in California.

A big viva/hurray for the "Garden State", NJ.

I'm so pleased to see some excitement and happiness from two of the leading experts on fig cultivars that are grown in my area. I have been checking the forum every night and hoping that everone is having a better growing season than I am here in NJ. Gorgi and Vasile I will always appreciate your knowledge and generosity. I also love Adriatic JH. Vasile, you stated only a handful will deliver in our terrible summer climate. What varieties are they?      Stay Well, Antonio

Antonio:
I will start with :
Adriatic jh
Malta black
Improved Celeste (O Rourke not)
Nero 600m
Tacoma Violet
Vasilika Sika(The shorter fruit version, not the Dalmatie type)
Malta Black, and Improved Celeste are early and will ripe in every position, even part sun,but the rest needs full sun,for best results.
They did have periods when the fruits soured this year,(for short interval),but compared to others, they are better adapted to bad unsuitable climate.
And by the way Antonio:Carmelitana ,you gave me as cuttings, seem to be Malta Black look alike in leaf shape.
No fruits yet.
Edit note:
Need to add Col de Dame (all),because they are super resistant to rain, but needs totally full sun,in New Jersey,if one do not have full sun,do not bother with it,because it will not work.
I had a couple of ripe fruits to date this year, and yes they are top notch, except ,my trees do not have full sun in any position in the yard only about 7-9 hours is the best sun they can get here,so they are  slow to ripe especially this year with the cold nights that started ,since August 25.
If Col de Dame has better climatic conditions ,I am sure it can be best and of course the more south we live the better.
Edit Note again:
I would like to pinpoint again for new gardener ,as a tip, that full sun is needed ,for some varieties, only in the cold climates of north, and northeast, and not in warmer climates like deep south or Central California.

hi vasile, thank you for the knowledge. Carmelitana fruits are gold in color. Very good fig. You let me know when you taste fruits. Stay Well, Antonio

Vasile - this is the fruit

Yes,it does look different in color compared to Malta Black, but sometime ,they do not show full color because of ,not enough warmth in our climate,so,I am not going to say one way or another.
I had Tacoma Violett this year, that were earthy -light brown,in color instead of violet like in other years, and that was ,because of lack of warmth, here.
I will grow them side by side, and compare in the future.

And JH Adriatic is indeed heavenly out here. :)

What I find surprising is how few figs people do grow in my area of California. But I think that is changing. Lately I've seen more varieties of interesting figs in the local nurseries besides the obligate Brown Turkey, Mission (a good fig) and some light-colored thing. I've been giving away a good number of trees locally, and people seem eager to get them.
