JIN AO FEN Fig

Hi all.  I am new to this forum and to figs as well.  Like a few hours ago my friend gave me an extra cutting she received when she ordered a Jin Ao Fen fig cutting off ebay new.  Now I am trying to find the best way to root it.  I have read several different ways and all seem  to be pretty straight forward, just trying to decide on one.

I have many other questions that I can't find the answer to on the web.  For example, what is the best climate for it?  I live in upstate SC.  I read that normally large figs don't taste as good as the smaller varieties.  Does anyone know what this taste like? (assuming I can actually get it to grow)  How big is the tree?

I'm sure I have more but for now I will settle for any information anyone here can give.

Thanks in advance.

give me a little bit to do some digging, i will find out what i know. i am sure someone else will chime in. as for rooting there are alot of ways to get this done. it seems the most popular is the baggie method. i will post a link about that in a min.

Hi!  Welcome to the forum!  When you only have one cutting with none to spare, worry mounts big time!  Fig cuttings will mold with too much dampness, so make sure whatever you use is barely moist!  They will root with some heat.  They just stay dormant if they are in cool damp conditions, and wake up in spring when the room gets warmer.

Good luck with your cuttings!  I put mine in barely moist sphagnum moss in a zip lock, and label that with the variety and the donor.  I put a bunch of these baggies in a big black trash bag, and that makes them think they are underground in the dark.  Currently mine are in the garage.  Our temps make that garage nice and warm during the day.  Those that get snow need to use heating mats.

Thanks for the replies.  I am trying the moss idea.  I moistened it and put it in a plastic shoebox, sang it a lullaby and stuck it in the cabinet above my refrigerator.  It stays warm up there but not hot and stays dark as I hardly ever need any of the things I store up there. Sound good so far?

As long as you squeezed the moss to drain the excess water it's fine.  Air and moisture needs to be touching the wood.  Check it every few days to be sure there's no mold.  Temps should be 70-80.

Yes I did squeeze as much of the water out as I could then fluffed it up and layer it in the box, moss, cutting, moss making sure not to pack it down so it had lots of air pockets around it as well.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried putting some Physon 20 in the water they wet their moss, or paper with?  I use it in my clear wicking reservoirs for my mini violets to keep the water from turning green.  It is a broad range disinfectant, fungicide, virucide, and algaecide and completely plant friendly.  I'm thinking about rewetting the moss with some in the water to help prevent it from molding.  Any thoughts?

Actually I did a search and saw that yes in fact some have tried it.  I am going to rewet with it.  With only the one cutting I would hate to mess it up.
