Jolly Tiger fig

  • ank

I just thought I would share some of the pictures I had on my cell phone.   First three pictures is my Jolly Tiger fig, the green one is Deanna (very large one).  Last picture is a mulch and the composted horse manure with wood shavings pile that I brought for my in ground fig trees.  Does anyone know what is the best time of the year to apply compost?

I would apply compost in the spring when they need food to push new growth.

Compost can be a really  slow release fertilizer though, so fall is better if your trees are growing too late into the season. A good time is when the ground is frozen (if it happens this year)  so you will not compact soil and damage the lawn etc. with the wheelbarrow or tractor. Fertilizer applied in cold weather is not really used by plants and soil life until the temperature rises, so adding it early gives it time to spread through the root zone to be used in the spring.

Good tip, Brent.

Thank you guys for your advices.  I have another question to ask.  Is it ok to plant bare root persimmon trees in ground at this time of the year in VA?

Thank you,

Anton

I live in KY and was told by the source of my bareroot tree to wait until late Feb or March before planting.

and auction # 250975632504

Yeah Ank i went to your auction i was curious. ; )
Yeah once limb is green i have never seen it revert back similar to my panache limbs and fruit.
I grew a all green jolly tiger for a full season but let it go to the wayside for personal reasons.

Dieseler,

When the limb was small it had few variegated leaves on it at the base(that is why I left it on the tree). When it grew bigger the next season that branch only had leaves that were all green. As I can recall figs(fruits) were identical on bout variegated and all green limbs.  Figs were very testy when fully ripe.  I only had this fig for about 2.5 years and it is one of the strangest and I would say interesting figs that I have.  I am keeping a close eye on this one to see what it will do this season since the all green section is gone.   I guess I will try to promote more growth from variegated section of the tree. Dieseler, how old is your Jolly?  I saw your video. It is grate.  I have watched it about 100 times :-)

Hi Ank,
when pair of green leaves grow on variegated branch they have to be removed or from that point on they will be all green .

Its ok for a green and a variegated leaf to grow opposite each other that is fine,  just not a pair of green.

My first variegated fruit came last season on variegated branch prior it was dark colored as i have shown in prior pictures.

Non variegated branch brings dark colored fruit.

My plant i bought from the original source who had collectors search the world for unusual and rare plants.
I talked on the phone with the owner at the time of purchasing as i had some questions about the plant as it was not cheap .
He was the one who told me how to prune it to keep its variegation which is easily done.
This season coming up will be its 4th full growing season.
I have the original paperwork for my parent plant.

I got my Jolly Tiger from Asiatica Nursery which is unfortunately no longer in business.

Dieseler, thank you so much for letting me know how to keep variegation on Jolly Tiger fig.  If I would of know tis trick about a year and a half ago I would of had another big branch with variegated leaves. (live and learn)!!!!!

Thank you,

Anton
