Jon's favorite Figs!

Jon,
I thought of you. While shopping in Stop & Shop the other day I saw a box of figs that got my attention. They were not the Mission or dark figs that I usually see here. Checking the side of the box I see they were Brown Turkey!  From CA. In addition the same company had smaller boxes of 8 brown turkey figs, for $5.99. There was no price on the large box.

I didn't buy any. They looked kind of nice in the box but I
could imagine your reaction if you were here.

If they were dark purple large figs,me wife bought some in BJ store.
They were very tasty thow we know they do not pick totally ripe, like we do in our backyard.
Thumbs up,thow.
California has perfect weather for figs ,no doubt,no comparison to ours here in the northeast.

I am sure it was worth wasting the money on me. A little expensive for compost, but, hey..

Jon,

One might get the impression that you maybe don't like Brown Turkey figs.....  :)

Noss,
When I saw those Brown Turkey figs in the store I just couldn't resist
teasing Jon. I know how much he loves them!

They did look good but I have enough of my own figs without buying more.

Jon has totally influenced me about Brown Turkey figs.  I'm fairly new to figging and I only had a small crop this year.  They aren't sold often around here but we recently got a Fresh Market store.  They actually sell them and they had brown turkey and black mission.  Well, guess which one I bought because of Jon.  The brown turkeys might as well have been hedge apples... I was afraid to waste money on them.

Hi Cassandra,
dont let Jon influence you !
His taste may or may not be the same as yours, i think someone in his family likes the turkey type of fig.

I may yet get to taste one since I think one of the first two trees I purchased (from Tyty) was a brown turkey.  That was last year.  I can't even remember since it didn't mean a whole lot to me then.  I remember one was labeled a mountain fig.

Any way, they are gorgeous trees now, but they only got that way later in the summer due to the feeding method I learned about on this forum.  They got figs too late in the season to have time to ripen but I'm certain they will bear next year now that I know what I'm doing a little better.  The poor things looked terrible the first half of the summer.

Maybe my brown turkey figs will be awesome... who knows!

There seems to be some confusion.  Brown Turkey is the name of two distinct type of figs.  Eastern Brown Turkey which is large and many find bland, and Brown Turkey (southern) which is small and highly flavored.

Here are Monrovia's (Eastern) Brown Turkey and Brown Turkey - big difference.

Also Encanto Brown Turkey,  (not a BT), for EBT...
See recent Martin's  post and pic of the 5-figs-header- pic on this FF.

Yes, I do have this one, and I am happy that  it is not a BT.

My Monrovia BT wich I got rid of produced extremely large figs, this was the first to ripen and smallest at 160 grms.

And this is why I got rid of it.

bumble bees could go in and out of the eye.

There are many strains of Eastern Brown Turkey - Monrovia, Jon's, etc.  But what I was getting at was that folks are just saying "Brown Turkey", not Eastern or English Brown Turkey.  These Eastern (English) Brown Turkey figs are large and can be bland.

Referring to Eastern Brown Turkey figs as just "Brown Turkey" is confusing since Brown Turkey is the name of a smaller, more highly flavored fig that is common all over the south.

Some forum members might not be aware that there are two very different fig types involved.

...and the one I bought from a local nursery was labeled as "improved" brown Turkey, so I'm not sure what it is. I assume it's eastern, because the figs are big--but not nearly as big as the photo of the Monrovia BT above. Confusing indeed.

I am convinced that half of the figs labeled as BT are something else all together. I have many BTs that anything but BT, but all came labeled as BT. That makes talking about BT difficult. If your BT is really a Celeste (very common), then you will never relate  to most discussions of BT. And so on...

Check out Brown Turkey HD, Brown Turkey MD, Brown Turkey PM, Encanto Brown Turkey, etc. All were labeled BT but are not. Most people  buying a first or second fig will have no idea it is mislabeled.

What is Brown Turkey MD?  What is the MD?

noss

It came from a lady in Maryland who thought BT was the greatest fig ever, thought she coud convert me, sent some cuttings, and she did convert me to the idea that her fig was awesome, just wasn't a BT. I sued the initials to distinguish it from BT-PM, BT-EC, etc.
