Jon's unknown pastiliere pics?

Hello Guys!

Finally I decided to get a pastiliĆ©re. I was speak with a Hungarian friend, who was very kind and sent me a cutting from pastiliĆ©re, but is not the simple variety. This is the Jon's type, and he said it isnt dropping the fruit, but he wasn't sure in it.

I was make this topic, cause I need your help. I'd like to know is this cultivar dropping the fruit or not?
And I'd like to see some pictures about the fruit, and the tree, so if anybody has a picture please take it up!

Xenil,

I think there are some people growing the "unknown pastiliere" on this forum, try using the search function. If nothing comes up, try to go to the "figs 4 fun varieties" page and it'll be under "unknown pastiliere". I'm not sure about the fruit drop though, I think Jon said in a post somewhere that it might be a San Pedro type fig.

Here is the link to the exact page: http://figs4fun.com/Thumbnail_Unknown_Pastiliere.html

Hope this helps! Good luck!

donpaid,

Thank you for the reply, and the link. Unfortunately if its not a common type, is not the best news, due to the fig wasp doesnt native here. There are some places of the country where can be found, but its doesnt native...
I hope it is just a normal common type fig.

Xenil, I am in zone 7 I have Unk. Pastiliere in ground and I did get nice tasty figs like 5 or 6 of them.
It will drop some figs, but you do not need the wasp. It's worth it. Wish you well,

I am in zone 5a.
Don't laugh but I have a 6 years old 'Pastillier Unknown' from Jon in pot and it has never ripened any fruit here in Zone 5a though the fruits stay on the plant, most of it. I thought I did not know why I am keeping it but then realized it sometimes help in trade.

I am not sure if no-ripening here is due to climatic conditions or the need for pollination. I would have loved to see that dark ripened fig as shown in F4F varietal page.

Hey Kristian.
Check out Planet fig.com .it is a European study and they do include Pastiliere! Good luck with your tree!

Kristian.

My "Jon's Unknown Pastillere" started figs for three years in a row but the figs always dropped. For this reason I am eliminating it from my orchard this year. I'm in zone 6b (no fig wasp).

It never drops for me (pollinated) and in my book it is a super fig, the best I've tried.

Yeah, rub it in Igor :) .

Igor, did yours come from Jon or are you sure it's the same strain?

Hello Guys,

Thank you for the feedbacks. Very mixed opinions. I decided to grow this variety, because a lot of people told me its deserve a try. Fruit dropping was always a big problem with this cultivar, but the reason why my friend sent me this cutting cause he said "It might doesnt drop the fruit like the common type cultivar". Anyway, a lot of member said it has a very good fruit.
I think the best solution is to give him a try, and we will how does he perform over the years. If he wont produce any fruit, I'll remove from my orchard.

Me and my friend got the fig fever years ago and we imported it from Jon. We both gave up on
it. Lots of figs but they kept aborting.
