Jumbo fig

Here's an unknown variety that I collected while in California last Summer.

Has a strong Raspberry flavor on the acid side. I will see how it will do on the East coast.

I want one

Thanks for posting, Bass.
I like the colour combination, that is green when ripe and red inside, because it can make it a bit safer from human critters i.e. visitors who always feel at home to taste when they see a half ripe fig (& while you were waiting for it to ripen!).

It was a size of an apple. The flavor was sharp, strong raspberry flavor. Skin is very thin; eye is open on some of ones I picked.
Will see how it performs in the East coast.

Bass, I think those figs will be a winner on the East Coast!  Great find!  You know I will want one once proven success on the East Coast!  They look awesome.  cheers,

I will keep you updated on their progress. I took two cuttings and they both rooted.
I wish I got more info on its history. I knocked the door where the tree was planted and the lady that lived there didn't speak English. I asked her in Spanish if I can pick figs, she said Si and gave me a bag. She was only renting the place, the owner wasn't home.

Where in Cali did you find them?

San Jose. They weren't cared for. The tree wasn't being watered. It's probably a known cultivar from Europe. It was abviously planted, it wasn't a wild tree.

Bass,

It has a big eye.  How do you think that will affect the performance of this variety?  Will it ripen well where there is a lot of rain or small insects?

Joe

You're right some of these figs had an open eye, which usually means not suitable for humid climate. Time will tell.

Would an open eye also mean it probably needs pollenation?

I doubt this fig needs it. There's no other figs in that area that I noticed.

Temptateous looking fig. Good find BASS.

Looks & sounds like a great find Bass! I look forward to hearing more about this one.

A large fig and great flavor too -could be a winner :-) !

Bass thats a great looking fig and sounds like its very tasty too good find, was this grown in your greenhouse?

Those figs I picked from the mother tree. There were some that were bigger but I ate them before I took the picture. I didn't get a chance to post the photos earlier.
