Just a few trees

Here's part of my container garden, 221 trees...some are duplicates. The tallest one on the first row is a real McCoy, Texas Everbearing. It's 9' tall.

Sorry, there's too many to get them all in the picture.
cheers,

That's a great view!

Dennis,
Thanks for sharing.
As always, I curious about the Texas Everbearing. Can you post a few pictures of leaves and figs? Thanks.

Dennis, that is amazing!!!  What size are the containers?  And where do you find them?  They look nice!

Dennis, How in the world do you water all those trees? Do you use a sprinkler system?

Sure Pete. I will tomorrow. The mocking birds and catbird fight every morning to eat the figs from my TEVB. I usually get 2 or 3 figs. The figs are ruined by beetles if you doing tape the eye.

Peter, I installed an in-ground drip irrigation that kicks off every morning at 3AM for one hour. Each tree gets a gallon of water, some only get 1/2 a gallon. Most of these will be converted to self watering pots this Fall. If they need more water, I'll hit the manual override button and water them again for 30 mins. Too much water and the figs will be ruined.

This is one area were I fight coons DAILY!

Meghan, I'm cheap...so I get these pots at Big Lots for $9 bucks each. But I'm switching them all out to half plastic 55g food grade barrels for $10 bucks each. I got 50 barrels coming from a private source this weekend. And 50 more coming next week.

That is impressive, Dennis.  Thanks for sharing the pics and information with us.  I told my hubby to stop complaining about my measly 23 trees....lol.

Wow, what a project to convert those barrels to SWCs!  Can you post your method for doing this?  I have several 5 gallon SWCs and have been wondering about the best way to scale up.

I see one problem with your setup, too much grass.

Quite an extensive collection and I can only imagine all the work, keep up the great work.

That looks like a full-time job in itself!  Gotta be the best job ever though!

Cool

Looks great.  Do the rows run E-W or N-S?

It looks like there's plenty of room for more dennis!

That sight makes me smile.

Proof positive there is someone in the world with more figs than me. ;)

Very nice. :)

Dennis I have to say you really have a vast collection even if some are doubles. Even with your drip system I bet you still spend a lot of time checking them, up potting, trimming and of course EATING them figs!
Have you ever got lost in that fig jungle? You'd have plenty to eat until you found your way out ;)

very nice dennis, so if you like them do you put them in ground.

Very nice, Dennis!
I am just curious, what do you do with all those figs you collect in your forest???

Dennis: you are crazy! :)

Love it ! And that was only "part" of your container collection? Love to see more pics Dennis !

Dennis Hi. you got a real candy store there.
out of curiousity  above 200 pots? do you have 200 varieties or their are duplictaes etc?  what do you do if you want a backup of a special variety?

Frank it definately could be a full time job.  Those in the picture run east to west.  These trees are just part of my collection.  I have a patio of 75 trees in 5+ gallon pots, my driveway holds 10 cars bumper to bumper--I use half of the driveway for 82 fig trees plus 2 cherry trees.  In front of my greenhouse, I have 36 fig trees 6 of those are in whiskey barrels, behind the greenhouse ar 28 figs in self watering pots.  Adjacent to the greenhouse I have 36 figs in large pots.  On my first deck I have 62 figs and 2 citrus trees.  On the lower deck around the pool I have 162 fig and 4 pineapples.  Around the west wall I have 56 figs.  In my orchard, I have 72 figs.  And I'm missing some that are not counted.  All of these including those in my orchard are watered using drip irrigation -- execpt those on my decks and those in my driveway.  When I get home from work, around 5 or so, I'm out check, repotting, pulling weeds, etc till it starts getting dark.

Alan, those in pots are easy for me to manage.  Why?  Because I can easily change the soil of the pot to correct a problem or its water or whatever.  Those in my orchard are a challenge.  The squirrels bite the heads off my drip irrigation trying to get water causing less water for other drippers.  And some heads quick working sometime and you have to investigate why.  My containers have their main water line on top of them.  If something goes wrong, I can easily see the problem.  Not true when the main water line is in the ground.

I have a full time job.  But before I go to work, I have to get up and wander through my trees and check for coon damage and make sure the water lines are where they are suppose to be.  Every day, I find one has been moved or a pot laying on its side due to coons climbing the trees trying to get to the ripe ones on top.  I was picking 10 and 20lbs of figs a day weeks a go after the rains stopped.  When I check the trees in the AM, I have coverup from head to toe, wear long boots and carry a long wide hoe.  I was almost bitten by snakes and snapping turtles last year.  So the tools protect me from them.  Plus we have writing spiders.  They are HUGE and are everywhere!

Some of these figs are dups like....Tacoma Violet, Hardy Chicago, Improved Celeste, Celeste, Panachee, LSU Black and a few others.  I try to get 2 of everything in case I loose one.  But some are single rare trees that I move indoors in November.

Eithieus, growing in the ground is complete different than growing in pots.  For every fig in my orchard, I have a duplicate in a container.  I've got more to plant in the ground but the wife is putting the breaks on that idea.  I've made several member of this forum rich over the years by buying cuttings and trees years back.  Now here's the results of those cuttings and trees.  Thanks for all the comments and thanks to those whom have sold me and sent me trees and cuttings over the years.

Great view!

Dennis are the trees able to stay out during your winters or do you have to move them to shelter.

Martin, 99% of them stay out all winter.  However, I do winterize some at random.   Those in that picture are over 5 years old.  They do fine outside but if we have a wet cool summer like last year, the fruit will be delayed and not ripen.  With fear on my mind, I decided to bring a few big boys inside along with some little guys.  Here's a small list of a few I brought these inside:

Soudai
Col de Dam Grise (large tree)
Black Maderia (large tree)
Vernino (large tree)
Vasilika Sika (large tree)
White Greek (large tree)
Lounge D'Aout
Marseilles White
Rouge de Bordeaux (both trees)
Pastiliere (Baud)
Pastiliere (RT) (both trees are large --took 2 years before the fruit dropping stopped!)
Pastiliere (Read's)
Pissalutto
Toni's Brown Italian (remaining 5 large trees were not winterized--being tested for hardiness)
Bayenfeige Violetta (remaining 3 large trees were not winterized--being tested for hardiness)
Black Celeste (large tree, mother not winterized in orchard)
Black Greek (large tree--mother unwinterized in orchard)
Noire de Caromb (large tree--not hardy at all!!)
Violet de Sollies
Brogiotto Nero
Nero
Brogiotto Bianco
Cajun Gold (JR)
Ventura (not as hardy as most think!  had to bring inside a month ago)
Calvert (some are not winterized but should be--not that hardy)
Dalmatie
Tilsbury Turkey (other 3 were not winterized)
Improved Brown Turkey (tree does not need to be winterized but it's such a steady producer that I bought all 4 inside)
Texas Everbearing (got several of these from a variety of sources to compare to my giant tree--all are indoors and leafing out--fruits early)
Gypsy (large)
Hative D'Argenteuil (large)
Ischia Black (UCD) (all 4 are inside)
LSU 156 (not even close to being hardy!)
Lyndhurst White (large but several other one are not winterized)
Strawberry (large--other small guys are not winterized)
Macool
Maltese Falcon (large)
Malta Black (large--but others are not winterized)
Malta Purple Red (large)
Petite Aubuique (large)
