Just ate the first breba fig... Yummy

Just picked, documented and then promptly ate the first (hopefully of many) fig of the season, purchased this plant a couple of months ago, it came in small 1 gallon pot. Let it leaf ut and then bumped it up to 3 gallon. Depending on how much more it grows, it may wing up in 7 gallon pot before summer ends...

This plant has FMV, it seems out of the 2 dozen or so fig plants I've purchased this past winter about half have FMV. I am convinced that plants can be "pushed" through fmv with regular liquid feeding. You can see the new leaves are clear of fmv.

I have not mentioned the name yet,  so if someone wants to guess the variety, I will give (postage included) some free cuttings of this plant next winter/spring to the first right guess... buona fortuna...

I opened the pix showing the plant looking from top,and knew instantly, what it is.
I opened 2 more pixes and just assured me it is what i know it is.
White Marseilles,aka Italian honey
If you have it under a different name ,then put these names on it,because that is what it is.
I do not need cuttings from this one as I have many,Thanks
Yes it is a good fig,and for Florida one of the best.

First guess is Marseilles White

Second guess would be Deanna

could it be Alma? my alma looks similar to that

Herman got it, it is a synonym of Marseilles and was bought from Edible landscaping as Oregon Prolific variety.

Additional synonyms according to F4F site are ;
Blanche, Lattarula, St Anthony, Lemon, Marseillase, White Marseilles, bianci,  italian honey, white naples, figue blanche.

All these synonyms can create a lot of duplication, I believe I have italian honey from 3 different sources, it'll be interesting to see them all produce and compare fruit at same time. I liked the taste of this one, not overpowering, light and somewhat nutty, very sweet and smooth.... am ready for more...

Quick Question:

Have you bought the St Anthony from EL.

Same?

I just bought it last fall, curious to see if it is like my IH cuttings.

Hey Ben, That fig you have is definately a Marseilles White.  The more I look at it the more I am convinced.  My tree produced 2 figs last year and was the first one to produce brebas.   Very good figs.

Dom, I had ordered a St Anthony's from EL, they said they were out and I swapped for a Petite Negri... I should be receiving that and a Sal's in a couple of weeks from Them.  It's listed as a synonym on f4f variety pages... I would venture to say, yes it is same, but have no personal confirmation of that.

I was bummed at how many fig plants have FMV, seems there is no concern from nurseries too try and build a "clean stock'...

Dominick - I would appreciate any future feedback on EL St Anthony. I understand there is a St Anthony that ripens to a dark coloured skin like the one Jon has posted on his variety page. I have a St Anthony from Jon and I don't think I will see any figs this year as it was cut back.

I first got my (EL) Marseilles back fig in 2002, but sad to say
I lost it 2 winters ago. Back then, EL offered it as:
Marseilles (Latturula/St.Anthony/Oregon Prolific).
Yes, I still do have a  fig-page ripped off their oldie catalog.
Now I see that all 3 variants are offered separately.
I was happy with what I had; it was a unique fig in my collection.
Skin was smooth yellowish which tended to brown-spot as it over ripens.
Pulp was light amber.
I do have other Latturula/Italian Honey figs from other sources, and it
lacked their very distinctive ribbed-skin.
Most probably, it was the St. Anthony one?

I Do have a few green/yellow skinned figs with white pulp and the majority have very similar leaves. But I too have noticed some differences in the flavour department. Need to keep a closer eye on a few of them like, Lattarula, Ficazzana, Doçe & St. Anthony EL & Mario's Unknown wich the figs are smaller and almost perfectly round and smaller in size and ripen earlier than all of the others. But they all have that distinct hard seed.

Its unfortunate if they seperated the names but not the figs. Oh well...

I have not yet tasted White Marseilles. It is nice to see those brebas forming in Florida. And you cannot fool "The Fig Wisperer".......AKA Herman2.

However, the Yellow Marseilles that I have, has seeds that are VERY LARGE.....much bigger than what is pictured in the OP. It has the largest seeds I have seen on any fig. The oil in those unfertile seeds gives it a very pronounced and pleasant nutty flavor. This one would be a good fig for denture wearers......no way those big ole seeds are getting under a denture plate.
