Just Found A Cold Hardy Fig Tree

Hi! Everyone,

All of the fig trees that I have seen so far this year in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC were dying to the ground. Last year I passed by this tree a few times, but I did not stop and look at it. I thought it was a regular Celeste or Brown Turkey. This tree is in Washington, DC. While today it caught me attention, the whole tree did not died to the ground. Most branches of this tree survived the last winter, about zero degrees in my area. The leaves look like or related to Stella. What variety do you think? I will return there in about 2-3 weeks, to take more photos. Thanks for watching.

This tree is about 16 foot tall and about 20 foot wide.

Take a look at the leaves in my attached pic, I think they are the same. The one near me also survived this winter and has put on fruit, although there was a lot of damage to the main trunk on my unknown. Let me know if you agree with me.

Rafaelissimmo: The leave is related to Stella. Can you post more leaf and fig photos? Thanks for sharing.

Actually I was hoping you would confirm the similarity before I shlep to some stranger's house to examine his fig tree. I tried many fruits last year, green with pink/red interior. The fruit may not be ripe enough for a true comparison as crop is delayed this year.

That's a nice find Tam.

Nice tree Tam, keep us updated on your new found tree. Thanks.

Indeed.

Brunswick?

I'm thinking brunswick also.

A really great looking plant in any case!

The long finger-like leaves look like Brunswick, and I've seen the other leaf variations (without the long lobes) on them, too.  That would also explain the cold hardiness!

Hi Tam,
A ripe fig will help, because I would call that a "Dalmatie" - in the "Stella" family .
Ain't Brunswick a small grower ? Ain't Brunswick supposed to have a dark bark ? - Just asking, because Brunswick is on my "to-shop" list .
All that new growth, grey bark, green fig with red interior on the main-crop, for me this is a "Dalmatie". The leaf is a match as well.

Hi! Everyone,

Thanks for all your comments. I have a friend in Maryland who has 3 very large Brunswick trees . One tree is growing by the side and near the foundation of her house. The other two trees are on the other side of her house, but they are about 15 feet away. All of them died to the ground last winter. I used my energy to sense the energy fields of this tree. I found out that this tree has a lot of Brunswick's energies. Maybe many of you are right, this tree is Brunswick, but it is a better strain and it is more resistant to cold than other Brunswick trees. I will update more photos of this tree in about a month and see if it is really another strain of Brunswick. Thanks for sharing.

Best,
Tam

report back with pics and a flavor report when fully ripe.
We will all be waiting in anticipation.
Hopefully the owner is receptive to cuttings and or airlayers

Hi! Rafaelissimmo,

I used my energy to sense the energy fields of your tree. I found out that this tree has about 35% Brunswick's energies, but I have a feeling that this tree is not Brunswick, maybe it is the Stella tree. Thanks for sharing.

Tam
