just noticed this on the stem.

it's over 100 degree F here today. went out to check the trees and notice that my KB leave stems are turning purple.

the trees are not showing heat stress since reporting. VdB, and paradiso gene are in full sun. KB, i'm still keeping it under shade during hottest part of the day.

Pete,

Proof you have a VDB.
That's just one of the characteristics of a VDB. Adds color to the already dark leaves.

Edit: I guess I moved too soon on this one.

Hi Bullet
very pretty when they display that color.
Does KB stand for kathaleen black.

If you really had a problem, the leaves would have shown something first - they are more sensitive.

martin,

yes, KB stands for kathleen's black.

the picture is KB stem. VdB stem is not as dark. they have very slight blush of purple. on KB, veins under the leaves are turning purple also.

i gave up getting figs from KB this year. paradiso gene is now getting baby figs.

From my experience that stem coloration is usually a sign of a good fig. I will ALWAYS buy or collect cuttings from ANY fig that I run across with that coloration in the stem and/or in the bud tips. That coloration is often more pronounced during cooler temperatures.

My NdC has red stems too...

Colors on some of my plants will show in veins only sometimes on edges of leaf in spring as they emerge and quickly wane as leaves keep growing.
I have some pictures but won't disrupt thread with them.

As for leaf stems on "my" plants not in spring but only when the weather turns nice and warm they display such as my mission and negretta.

My Vdb does not display such stem coloration to date only in stalk where it meets the neck then turns a darkish red to sometimes purpleish.

leaf stem from VdB this mornibg...

not as dark as KB.

Many dark figs have this characteristic, including VDB, Black Mission, Gino's, Negronne, Bethlehem Black, Petite Negri, etc.

There is a thread about pink stems here at the forum I started some time ago where I presented pics of varieties that do it. Dom made one while I was typing mine so I deleted my thread and added to his. Find it here:
