Just Planted Bare Root

I just planted my 2 bare root Italian Everbearing Fig Trees that I got in the mail here in Orlando on Sat. Feb. 13, 2016.
They are approx. 5 ft. tall sticks with no branches or leaves. I water them every other day for 2 hrs.
What I would like to know is when will they start to grow? Is there anything else that I should be doing? When do I fertilize them?

Cynthia I don't think if you lived in the Mojave desert they would need that much water Stop it you are going to rot the roots I'm sure this time of the year once a week is sufficient and not for 2 hours my god I can't believe they didn't float away Don't give them any fertilizer until you see them leaving out even then 1/2 strength just leave them and let nature take it's coarse

PS Welcome to the forum

When did you plant them. ?? February 13. Did you plant them in ground or pots ? Do not water them for two hours. You will kill them. Only water them when dry or close to dry. Just enough to give them a drink. You inviting fungus knats and rotting the roots. It takes weeks for them to get acquainted with thete new environment and produce new roots and growth.

My god I just had visions of the movie The Perfect Storm

Cynthia,
I am not sure how well your soil drains, but with that kind of watering since 13th (which is about 7 days now), you have already water stressed the tree.

Please stop watering them........I hope the roots were strong enough to withstand all that the stress.

When you notice the top 1 inch of the soil becoming dry, you can start watering once every two weeks until they leaf out. A 2 to 3 minute watering with garden hose will be sufficient until early summer or the tree starts foliage. Then you can start more frequent watering.

Where did you get them ?

Hi, Cynthia!  Welcome to the forum!  Is your soil all sand?  If so adding a lot of organic material will help with a some issues, especially water retention and nematodes.  Fertilizer will help that organic material break down.  If you add only material that's fully composted you may not need much fertilizer. The roots should start growing fairly soon so some mild fertilizer now probably would be helpful.   As mentioned above, water when the top inch or 2 of the soil is dry, water enough to wet about 1 foot below where you think the roots are and an area at least twice as far from the tree as the drip line is.  Early on your tree will need more water than in future years.  Try not to let the leaves droop.  If they do water more frequently.  It's always to some extent trial and error.  If your soil is deep sand it would be hard to over water your tree.

If you have clay you also want to get as much organic matter in there as possible.

I just hope your trees didnot come from Willis Orchard or Aaron's. Both have a bad rap.

Aaron's as in TyTy.

Seems like a lot of water for fig trees but you may have sandy soil.  I recommend a soil moisture meter if you aren't sure about how much water to give them.  They're around $10 at any box store.

Yes as in TyTy. Maybe they've cleaned up their act. I know I was taken by them years ago. All of my trees ended up being Celeste . Many others were taken by them too.
