After reading a great deal I decided to buy my second Fig Tree from a popular online Fig seller. Edible Landscaping. Incredible packaging.. A VdB. Should I repot this into a 1 gallon pot?

Thank you all for continual help from and the great SEARCH feature :)

VDB

This one is one I bought from a generous member Allcelestage. Not sure how to pot it since it had a huge U shape to it.

I'd put the one from Edible Landscaping into a 2 gallon to start, but know, it's gonna need bigger and bigger.

Hi Sal,
Those trees are still dormant. I would wait until you can put them outside and pot them up then.
The second one looks like needing some water. Even while dormant figtrees need some water .

The soil is moist not wet.. Should I water it more?

That's what I was thinking.

For me....

I'd use a 5-gallon bucket w/drainage holes....5-1-1 or, "Modified 5-1-1-1" quick-draining mix, and I would shy away from those mixes that are loaded with fine peat moss.
Water should pour right through a good mix and not turn it into a swampy soup.  Given the correct culture, a fig tree can grow very quickly, and the roots will fill smaller containers, making it necessary to keep doing up-potting, often.

For the stem with the bend:  Use a tall and stiff, bamboo stake, and tie the stem
first at both the top and middle, and then start tying the stem at the top drawing it closer to the bamboo stake.  Do this by small degrees if necessary.  That bent stem will straighten out over time. Use some foamy padding to protect the bark if its gonna get rubbed by the stake.  Keep tying the new growth to the stake as it elongates.  You'll have a straight tree in no time at all.

I bought more supplies today at the local Hydroponic store. I already had Pro-Mix. I also picked up some Bamboo which I'll start using today for training. They also had a bunch of different sizes of buckets so I bought different sizes.

Where is a link on making a 5-1-1 mix? Actually I see the ratios but I'm not sure what the numbers stand for.

Thanks

Sal:

Do a quick search: "5-1-1 Growing Mix" on this forum....you'll get many postings a wealth of information to chose from.  Also, on You-Tube, and Google.
