Just setting figs?

One of my unknowns is just now setting some fruit. It has been inground for 1 1/2 years and is about six feet tall.

Is it setting late due to the young age and this being it first full year in ground or ????

Charles,

What seems to be happening with my inground figs is unless they start to fruit early in the season, the summer heat is too intense for them.  Consequently, they wait until the days start to shorten before setting the crop.  I have about a dozen trees in the field which have put on fruit in the past few weeks.  All of my trees were damaged by the cold, so they got a late start growing.  This is the third season I have seen this pattern.  My guess is your tree needed to get established, so it did not set fruit earlier.

Will setting this late leave enough time to ripen?

Probably it's because it's still young and only in ground for a year or so. Should set earlier as it matures. This year with some crazy cold and damp weather my figs are all late, so that may be a reason also, but in your zone you may have enough time for them to ripen.

James and BLB thanks for that. I think they will be back on track after this Winter.

Dale in my case maybe. My first frost may not be till mid December BUT we usually have fig rust which will defoliate the tree. It's a toss up now. I looked today and did not see any fig rust but I have already heard others speaking of seeing it on ther trees.

Dale,

There should be enough time in central Texas to ripen.  The problem is, the days will be getting cooler and not hotter, so the flavor will suffer a bit.  But, we are known to be in the 80s here until December.

Thanks. It's nice to have a point of reference to know if the figs are on track.

fig takes about 3 months to ripen. if your weather will hold heat around middle of nov. and little longer, it should work. my cut off is around late july to early aug. we usually have mild weather setting in around middle of nov... tho i have figs in nov. before. i want all my trees to finish ripening the figs by end of oct., and get ready for winter by end of nov. but too early to talk about winter.. my figs are just now starting to ripen.
