Just starting...

Hello All!
I am just starting out growing figs. Last year I planted a Celeste, which did wonderful the first year but promptly died over the winter. Should I dig it up or wait to see if it puts out from the roots? I live in North Alabama and have soil that doesn't perk very well. Last year we had a pretty severe drought. I know very little about figs but I am reading a lot
about them on the web.
Thanks

John

Hello Yellowhammer.

I would give it more time, the year before last I had a Celeste that I mowed over because I thought it was a goner!
now it is 5' tall, I would give it at least another month!
I might add, scratch the bark to see if it is green underneath, if it is you will have a good chance it will make it.

And welcome to Figs4fun.....a word of warning, fig growing can be contagious :-)

Welcome to fig forum John, Cecil above this post gave you great advice.
I like your butterfly out !
Soon  as many her say on fIg forum you will soon have the FIG BUG. ;)

Leave it alone. Digging it up will be an additional stress. if the roots are alive, it will probably resprout. If not, digging it up won't help. Some winter protection might be in order in the future.

Thanks for all the advice and well wishes! Could anybody tell me a good source for scion wood? Just some fun varieties that will grow in the deep south. Thanks,

John
