Just talked to Mr James A Robin...

I just got off the phone with Mr. Robin.   He said he has not yet put out his list, but he will have a smaller inventory this year due to his cuttings failing.  He said the temperature dropped after he had put his cuttings in his buckets, per his normal process, and the temp dropped to 18, thus destroying the cambium.

He said things are going fast, and as normal you send him payment up front for your figs and he will ship them out sometime after November.  You will receive a copy of the freight bill and he asks that you send the freight payment back to him upon receipt of your plants.

I am getting a LSU Smith's, LSU Tiger, and a new one-but he said it is an old fig, and I forgot to ask how he spelled it.  He said there are actually two that go by that name, different spelling, but he has the "good one".  Galbun vs Galburn??  He recommended that for my area, so we will see.

Here is his contact info:

He had me laughing right off the bat...has caller ID and says "well hello Miss Sara", then asked me if I was a fig nut.   I assured him I was indeed, hooked!  He just chuckled.

*I hope it was okay to post this information...if not, please let me know and I will remove the post.

sure seem ok to me sara....however he better ship you some extra free plants for the advertisement

He's very friendly and knowledgeable person. There are two varieties with very similar names (but different tastes), one is, Gulbun and the other is, Guilbeau. Both light colored figs. IMO, Gulbun tastes better.

Other good choices that he might have are, Scott's blk., Hollier and LSU Yellow.

Navid.

No ,No !:Guilbeau is a Large purple Black fig,not lite colored.

He did tell me this one is light green-yellow.

Maybe I should be more specific.
I have the Gilbeau French and it's not a dark purple fig. It has green skin which it'll turn slightly tan when fully ripened.

This is what my Guilbeau looks like in East Tx.

Figluvah, any chance Guilbeau taste is must have ?

Paully,

The tree was real young when that fig ripened but it was pretty good I would say!

Sad to say it froze to death last winter, I have a ground layer as back up but it is not growing at all?

I am new fignut, so excuse me if this is common knowledge, but why would you buy the tree in november when it's dormant instead of feb or march when you can have tree which is out of dormancy and you don't have to worry about storing/protecting for winter?.

Hi Rchukka,

Best answer I think is because that is when Mr Robin has them available for sale. He has several reasons for not wanting to ship when in active growth, such as shipping costs for trees in pots (which most people prefer when in active gowth) possible problems with the heat should the package be outside too long, his propogating schedule etc. He explained all this to me via phone about a year ago.

Thanks for the info Figluvah. Glad you have a back-up. May one day try to trade cuttings for it.
