Kadota at SuperKing Market for $3.99/16oz box

This was a pleasant surprise today.
Every single one was ripe to perfection.
I don't know what their secret is delivering in such ripe form without losing any to spoiling and souring.
This amazes me. Only in America...

Now the important stuff. hm..The taste was sweet.
...I mean JUST sweet! No complexity, no foggy aroma, just sweet jammy ghue inside a slightly leathery skin.
It's better than nothing but...really...is this how Kadota should taste? I'm just asking...

I think I am just beginning to understand Martin.

I tried that Kadota too. For some reason my Kadota is much tastier, even when it is not fully ripe.
The difference is like between the store bought tasteless tomatoes and the ones from your own tomato plant.
Go figure...

Hi Aaron4usa,
Just stating: In Portugal, this year, I (only) once saw someone selling ripe green faced figs for 1.50€ per kilogram . I took 3 kilograms, the seller did not understand what I was doing :P.
Some of the figs were big and I was fearing not having enough to have one fig per person. But finally, although big they were light and I almost emptied the box - The guy got looking at me like: "no don't you take them all. I'm not going back to the tree, I'm tired now! "
Mine were sugary and the more tasty were the ugly looking - you known a start of yellow-brownish on the skin. I snapped a pic and will open a topic with them ... 1,50 per kilogram ... Man, later I just started to think that I should have bought them all, including
the tree :) ... But I'm sure he wouldn't sell the tree to me so ... I was about to ask about the strain but the seller was a fairly old man, that probably would like to keep some secrets and wouldn't know, so I didn't start the conversation !
You know, buyer's secret !

The label says: "Cheese-Filled".

They sell that same brand at my local grocery store in Florida.  The figs are quite good for store bought figs.  Some of the more ripe ones have a thick, honey interior that is very sweet.  I agree that the skin is a little rubbery/chewy.

Hey, to make you feel better, they are $5.99 at my store.  And I still buy them so i can get my fig fix.  My plants are all young, so nothing has produced for me yet.

They do from time to time, sell these figs as 2 for 1.

Making me drool.
Anyone know of any stores that sell figs in Niagara Peninsula?

Yes, amazing that fresh fruit can be delivered
from 240 miles away by refrigerated truck and not spoil.
Truly amazing they did not spoil on that hellish 4 hour journey.

Unfortunately the people in the rest of the world,
lack access to trucks, roads and figs.

Only in America,
and always the best in LA

:-)

Just curious,
how can a fig be "ripe to perfection"
and have a stem that is straight as an arrow ?

Do you have any clue what a ripe fig actually is ?

Hungyjack,
Please read your PM.

Well, right off the tree, fresh as a daisy, my fav!  Nothing bettah!  I have not yet tasted a fig better than a fresh Kadota from the tree.  I have a lot of figs, VDB can't stand up to Kadota!  Period.

Suz

Nice to know Suz, I guess I made the right decision for buying 2 Kadotas, almost did not get them.

I'm so glad there is hope after all for Kadota for me...I am growing few, thanks to very generous forum members.
I'm glad you pitched in Suz. :)
I'm sure home grown would be much better tasting...

I was wondering if they treat them with some sort of chemical bath to slow down souring and spoiling process. They had lost their aroma completely...and today (since I had rinsed them all before refrigerating them, I can smell some figgie aroma, but nowhere near to fresh fig smell.
