* Kadota Cuttings*

Holiday Greetings from Sunny Southern California!

First of all: I Love This Forum!!!

Secondly: I'd like to make some more new friends here as well as add to my family's backyard fig collection :)

I recently "transplanted" a Kadota Tree from Oceanside, CA to our yard! I have no experience doing this but had the opportunity when this fig's owner wanted it out of there.

So it appears to be dormant now and here is a pic before I started hacking away:

I won't know for a season (or two) if the tree will survive the shock, but I have a nice small batch of cuttings regardless :)

If you would like four (4) cuttings from this 'Unknown California Kadota' please send me your mailing address. Each batch will include at least one branch tip. They will be wrapped in moist paper towels, sealed in ziplock baggies, and sent in a bubble mailer USPS First Class. Should be there in 2-? days (depending!) & cost effective ($4!) Sorry but shipping to the lower 48 United States only.

Oh.. what a pretty tree. I hope you did not cut away all the "ONE YEAR" growth... that is where you get your Brebas...  YOU will figure out I am sure... YOu can tie the branches down to force them into more side branches. Again, I am happy for you.

One year Growth...Brebas...????   I thought you cut them all the way back...I may have cut too much....oh well, still learning...LOL

That's the exact article that inspired me to go "Rescue" this Fig!
I'm sure I pruned off too much but the severity of the transplant shock will probably be the deciding factor whether it survives.
I got as much rootball as possible - Crossing fingers over here
At least its "babies" will live on :)

In the southern Portugal there are various strains of the Dottato, Kadota family of Common or Cachopeiro figs, with many names depending on the respective regions. (Pingo de Mel, Moscatel Branco, Rainha,etc)

One of these figs, starting to ripen big brebas at the beginning of June is the ´Sete Camadas' - translates 'Seven Layers' maturing figs all the way through, non-stop, up  to the end of September and beyond. From August on, figs are smaller but very sweet and juicy (honey types) specially if they are near caprifigs

The method to prune this tree depends on what your needs are:

-Predominance of (brebas) or
-Less breba like fruit, and plenty of the smaller sweeter figs

Typically it develops into a big and very robust tree.
It does not require pollination

I have 2 Kadota Trees one is young and one is Mature.....The mature tree gives out sweet figs that are so sweet that I only eat 2 at the most....the other is milder and able to eat a few. I may hit you up for some cuttings. Do you need Celeste...????

Lampo: Incredible how many variety of Dottato/Kadota from Portugal there are! ´Sete Camadas' sounds like Fig Factory; constantly cranking out ripe delicious fruit - Wonderful!
Armando: Those Kadota pics look Amazing! I want to taste a Fig so sweet it stops me at 2 - Yum! Thank you but another generous member has donated Celeste cuttings to our little collection, however there's always a "Trade to be Made" ;)

If you have left over, you should  stick them on the ground and let them take their sweet time. if they turn into trees, you have giftss to pass on or trade, or keep for rootstock of other new varieties, you may acquire. I hate seeing going to waste.

Side Note: I just now bought JustFigs' Kadota cuttings oon eBay because sort of felt weird for "giving" so many of these while he's over there doing his biz. I didn't really think about that first; Sorry Giacomo & Thank You!
