Kadota fig

Hi All,

Bought myself a Kadota fig tree today for my birthday, that was yesterday.
Since no-one in my family got me one, I gifted myself.
It has about twenty figs on it, I hope they ripen.
Anyone else have one?
I'm thinking of going back and getting a "Peter's Honey" also.

Hi Jerry
Happy Birthday.
Go ahead and treat yourself is what i would do. You will always have room for 1 more.

Were only here for a short time - Enjoy It.

Thanks Diesler,

One of the "Peter's Honey has a real long branch that is this years growth and is still green and tender.
If it was cut off and placed in water would it root?

My dad did it years ago and it was a hit and miss.
It seems that the softer it is the more they rooted.
If they were hardening off they wouldn't root and he had to put them in soil.

If I get the Peters Honey, I would need to cut the branch to fit it in my little car.

Jerry

Happy Birthday, and congrats on your Kadota Jerry. I live in Toronto and have a Kadota from Grimonut no ripe figs yet & My Father has two kadota's from Monrovia. Both his kadotas are ripening as we speak had my first kadotas on Friday and boy were they good nice and sweet. Also had my first Couple Peter's honey figs this weekend nothing to brag about, most disapointing figs I ate this season will let the remaining figs get really really ripe to see the difference.

Hi Nelson and thank's!

I used to live in Hamilton and my father is still there, and have family in the Golden Horse shoe area.
I'm glad I picked the Kadota over the Peter's Honey.
The two trees they have left are on the small side.

The green house still has plenty of Kadotas and Black Missions left.
They are all 30% off from $69.99, with tax it was $50.40.

Is it hot and muggy in the big smoke?

Jerry

Hey Jerry yes its been another humid year here in toronto allot of days its been in the 40's celcius with the humidy. I too had family in Hamilton they now have moved to Toronto. Allot of the local nurseries here sell monrovia figs for $69.99 during the warm months then bring it down half price when the  fall hits sometimes its worth waiting a couple months. I too bought a Mission fig this year also from Monrovia bought it at a local nursery and was lucky enough to eat a couple figs from that plant so far my favorite fig this season. Best balance in flavours and nice size fig too I was lucky I had store credit or I too would of had to bite the bullet and pay $69.99 plus taxes. Jerry not saying that Peter's honey is not a good fig, The ones I ate so far were just bland not sweet in anyway, but usually it needs allot of heat to taste good and possibly they needed a couple more days to taste better.

I still may go and get one.
It's a bit of drive to go to that nursery.
It's like going from Mississauga to Richmond Hill.

Jerry

Ya thats a bit of a Drive, Hey Jerry if you want to wait until the fall I can send you some Mission cuttings.

Buster you could probably bend that branch to fit in car or stick it out the window.  ; )

If you have a sun roof .........

Thanks, That would be great Nelson.

Jerry

No Problem, Jerry.

If you want, I may have a an air layering that I am trying of a brown turkey I can send you.

OMG Peter's Honey is sooooooooo  sweet, honey is dripping all over.

hi Nelson,
what nurseries in your area do you know of that sell figs,
I have only seen them once in my waterloo, at beginning of April.
No variety was indicated and the staff had no idea that there were
varieties of figs to choose from.

Jerry, I got a rooted Kadota plant this spring. It is growing well but no fruit yet. I hope to get some fruit next year. Ripening will be an experimental test. None of my fig plants are close to ripening. Dieseler has a Zone 5 with warm summer and surprises me with all those yummy ripe figs.
I hope you have some good micro-climate in your Zone 4 to get ripe figs. It will be some good information to know about ripening patterns in your area.

hblta, Nurseries that I have seen & Purchased figs from are Humbernurseries they are very pricey in my opinion, Plant World on Eglinton also sells fig trees from time to time as does sherway gardens. Islington Nurseries also sells figs most of the year bought three plants there, Vandeemer nursery also sells figs, richters herbs sells hardy chicago really cheap.

thank you
Nelson
