Kadota, Peter's Honey, or Something Else

These are pics of a fig that was sold as a "Banana" fig". I assumed it was a Kadota, but I am now wondering it is not something like a Peter's Honey (I will see about getting some leave pics too). The figs just seem a little too small for a Kadota. These all seem to have a stronger richer flavor than Kadotas that I ate last year too. Most of the figs were just a little bigger than a quarter (forgot to add something for scale).

Many of these look quite ugly, but the ones covered in the brown sugar spots were the most amazing tasting ones. All were great and delicious. They tasted strongly of a rich caramelized brown sugar taste. But the little brown ones had a strong vanilla flavor too. This was very surprising. It make made my eyes widen and brought a big smile to my face. I have read other people say the tasted vanilla in their figs, and I didn't understand before now. It was a very pronounced flavor in the little brown ugly ones. Wow these were good!

Cliff those look sweet!

I don't know what they are but I want them.

Maybe an LSU fig like Hollier.

how about Brooklyn White

Brain - They are very sweet. One of the best sugar/honey figs that I have tasted yet.

Tony - I don't think Hollier, as they have a more open eye and seem smaller in general. I haven't seen Brooklyn White yet, although I have a small rooted cutting from this winter.

I'm sure the variety was purchased locally at some nursery. The owners of the mother tree don't know the variety. They don't do much with the figs either. I plan to start more cuttings of this variety as soon as I can get some.

Very nice Cliff. If not the same, Looks awfully close to Marylane Seedless.

You could also see my Lemon fig from a previous year (top left)

Is it possible that they changed the name from Lemon to Banana or vice versa? :)

Thanks for the idea Sas. I had not thought of a Marylane. I will keep that in mind. I have a small in-ground Marylane, and I will double check to the pics of the current fig. I have not seem a ripe fig yet from my confirmed ML tree. I am sure this container tree will be done by the time the other ripens. They were selling ML figs at Houston Garden Center a few years back.

I had thought of the Lemon fig. But it seems a name given to many yellow figs. I have not seem, or heard of, one down here in Houston either. But it's possible. Thanks again.

Looks a lot like my Alma fruit.

Here is a comparison picture, with Alma being the two upper figs and the "Banana" figs at the bottom. The unknown "Banana" fig goes from green to yellow, with no red or pink on the fig. The yellow figs are also smaller than Alma, even on the mature mother tree.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Hi Mario,

I agree that Alma has a brownish color on the outside.

My Banana fig trees are hardier than Kadota.  My Kadota dies back to the ground every year.

Here are some of the leaf forms. Sorry it took a while to post them. Work and family life has been busy.

I also drove by the mother tree that I took the cuttings from, and it has completely finished it's fruiting by July 1st here in the Houston area. But this is a spring when everything started early.
