Hi! Everyone,

Thank you for welcome me to this forum. I hope I can find this tree. Anyone please let me know more information about this fig tree. Will I be able to grow it sucessfullly here in Silver Spring, Maryland 20904?

Thank you.

I live in Rockville and all indications are that KB should do well here.  It was introduced to the forum by Gene Hosey who lived in DC at the time.  Gene's enthusiasm about this variety have a lot to do with its popularity; clearly it did well for him in this area.  I should be able to give you an airlayer later in the season.  I'll send you a PM.

Tam, welcome to the forum. Hang around and learn like I and the rest of us here. Loads of good info here and a ton of good people. Have a big smile to all.

Hi! Everyone,

Thank you for your information. Thanks Rewton for letting me know that you will give me an airlayer of Kathleen Black Fig Tree. You are so nice. But I will pay for that airlayer. Rewton, please let me know what does Kathleen Black Fig taste like? Thank you.

Sincerely,

Tam

As I mentioned in my email, my trees are too small to fruit.  I probably won't know about taste until 2014.  Others on the forum can comment on the taste (Herman2, Bullet08 etc.).

Hi! Eveyone,
How are you? Thanks Rewton for letting me know that you will have an airlayer of Kathleen Black Fig Tree for me later in the season. Yes, I would like to have that airlayer form you. I will plant Kathleen Black fig tree in the ground. I had planted in the ground 3 fig trees 2 years ago: one LSU Purple, Brown Turkey, and Celeste. LSU Purple does not grow any. I stays almost the same when I first planted it. It is about 2 foot height. Brown Turkey died to the ground both years. I just dug it up 5 days ago. Celeste still stays the same as I first planted it. But It does not get killed to the ground in both winter. Its branches are fine now, no winter damage at all. Last week I bought 7 foot Black Mission, 7 foot Brown Turkey, and 7 foot Celeste fig trees at a nursery in Virginia. All 3 fig trees are in the ground now. I am propagating a few Black Mission cuttings in the plastic bag now. I have a friend who is also living in Silver Spring, Maryland 20905. She has a very large fig tree in her backyard. She told me that her fig tree is at least 25 years old. The previous owner got it from Portugal. the mother tree has multiple trunks and a few of the trunks are about 6' diameter.  She dug 2 small suckers 2 years ago from the mother tree and planted about 100 feet in the back of her house. I saw that 2 trees last summer 2012. At that time, they were about 3 foot height x 3 foot wide. On Monday of this week I went to her house and saw that 2 years old fig trees again. They are very huge. There are no winter damage to the branches at all. They all have multiple trunks and about 7 foot height x 8 foot wide. I have not taste these figs yet. My friend described the figs are small to medium size, figs are purplish red, and the inside is pink, and the figs have a lot of jouce and are super sweet. Since the mother tree was planted too close to the back of the car garages. Moreover, she told me that bees were around a lot during the figs were ripe. These 2 reasons let her cut the mother fig tree to the ground few years ago. On that Monday I dug a few suckers from the mother tree: one 1 1/4 inch double trunks 5 foot height, one 3/4 inch double trunks 4 foot height and many branches. These 2 fig suckers were planted in pots now. I am propagating many of these cuttings outside in the potting soil. and in a plasic bag inside my house. I will take the picture of this fig tree and its fruits this summer and see if anyone know the name of this cultivar. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Tam
