Kathleens Black Main UPDATED 9-18-13

Even though this is my first KB main fig, I was a little disappointed. It was very sweet but there
is a lacking for flavor. Just sweet and a little figgy with no crunch. Three year old tree, maybe it
gets better. It weighed inn a 1.27 oz or 36.03 g. About a 7.

Sorry to hear that, Mike, but it's been a weird fig year. My always reliable Hardy Chicago, for example have sucked this year, as have my MBVS and several others. So, I am totally at a loss in judging any fig this year.
Another example: My almas started off as the greatest tasting of any year. Then for two weeks, they rotted on the tree and splatted to the ground. After that they went back to normal. There are way too many variants to factor in these days to make a definitive statement regarding the quality of a fig.

Anyway, here's my two year old KB that should be ripening any day.

Mike ,Your fruit is filled with water,it is because of climate at the date it got ripe.
If you have more fruits on tree now,it will surprise you later,if the weather get dry,for longer periods.
Started about 10 days ago, when the climate here ,was rainy and muggy, no fruit was good here on any cultivar, for fresh eating.
I picked some for fig Jam that is it.

1st yr KB figs is not all that good. give it few yrs. it's 2nd yr that my KB is putting on the figs, and it's definitely better. i'm hoping it will get even better next yr. last yr when i forced the figs by pinching it.. the figs were not right. the texture was grainy.. the taste was sweet, but nothing else. this yr, there is definitely more character and complexity. and texture was just right.

Frank, your KB looks really productive.  That's good to see since I seem to remember others have gotten indications that it is difficult to get to fruit, or at least difficult to start fruiting when young.  Did you pinch it earlier this season?

My KB has been excellent since it's first fruit. I am certain you will love the taste once it starts really producing. Herman is correct re the weather, too much moisture will affect flavor of any fig. Other factors such as soil, heat, amount of sun, fertilizer, soil ph and such can also have an effect. KB is considered a bit fussy and rightly so, but it is well worth the effort. Mine is very late this year as I planted it in ground last year so it seems focused on roots, plus I did have some winter die back. This is an excellent fig, definitely a premium for taste. I strongly recommend you give this one time.

Rewton, yes that one was pinched.

Frank:You did it:You made that young plant produce more figs than I ever seen on a young Kathleen black.
Just make sure you protect it well this Winter because it will be more sensitive to die back because of the work it needs to do to ripe those figs.

Thanks, Herman. That's quite an accolade coming from you.
The winters are not a problem in North Florida. My biggest headache is an early Spirng freeze after weeks of warm weather. It has happened twice to me in the last few years.

Picked the second KB this morning and it was much, much better. A beautiful looking fig. Sweet but not to sweet and little jammy with no crunch. Not watery at all.
About an 8 on this one with more improvement expected.

Very nice fig tree. Thank you for posting.

Best,
Tam

That one looks great, Mike!

Frank, very nice set up you got going there. Did you remove the grass in that large circle or just start dumping your lawn trimmings there and choke all the exsiting grass out? Im going to be planting some more figs this coming spring and hate removing the grass. If its as easy as dumping lawn trimmings that will make my work so much eaiser and enjoyable!

Thanks, blueboy. The crop circle was produced by aliens....I mean, generic roundup. :)
