Kathleen's Black.....where, and how much $$$$

I might want to try growing Kathleen's Black fig.  I never heard of it until a week ago.  I haven't yet decided...it depends.

I know nothing about this fig variety, but a quick search on this forum has given me only a little information, and mostly speculation that it might be the same as some French fig....and I can't remember the name..."Noire de something or other.

Anyway, how is this variety for a short, summer season, up in NYC?  I will not grow a breba , just main-crop, and from what I read, the flavor is pretty decent.  Yes, no, maybe so?  Closed eyes?  Souring/splitting, vigor, hardiness in Zone 7?  Is it a keeper?

AND....where do I buy it?

Thought I'd run these questions by my fig-friends for the straight dope on this fig.

Thanks for comments, opinions, suggestions, thumbs-up, or thumbs-down.

Frank, I think if you use the forum search feature for Kathleen's Black, you'll find out more than you want to know. Most any subject can be easily searched. Good luck.

My KB is 2 yrs old. It's in 10 gal tub. I do not know how hardy it is since I keep my plants in garage over winter.

So far, I have not seen the fruit on this tree. I got the tree from Gene H. who found this variety. I have a thread going regarding KB, and it seems some other members are not getting fruits either.

It's possible it will do better in ground.

The tree grows very vigorously. I'm planning to keep much larger root than the top, and try different fertilizer schedule to see if I can get fruit this year.

I sent cuttings to three members this year. Depends on how the tree does this year, I might have cuttings next spring.

Herman where are you?? Herman has one in ground and it is doing fine for him in NJ. Because of his, I will likely plant mine in ground too.

Just read through the additional information, and this variety does sound interesting...but, difficult to find.  Herman has contacted me and said that this variety is definitely worth growing.

Thank-you for the performance data in different growing areas.  it helps to know what to expect.
