Keeping Pots Unclogged

I'm getting old folks. Someone said they were having problems with pots clogging. This is the solution I use.

Looks like a good system Tami...what I do is somewhat similar...first of all I take out my 1/2" drill bit and drill additional holes in the bottom "and sides" of the pot...then I put a layer of styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom of the pot(1" to 1 1/2" deep)...if for some reason I over water the tree then the water goes past the roots and through the styrofoam and out the holes...I have drowned a lot of fig trees before starting to use this method...and with the large holes I have not had a problem with clogging.

Exactly, anything to keep the holes clear. I made a couple of self watering pots with buckets and said "never mind"! It was not something I enjoyed doing so I'll just water.

Brilliant!  I use my crappy Mosser Lee spaghnum moss I bought at Lowes to fill the drainage holes in 1 gallon nursery pots.  I started using it after I failed miserably at starting cuttings in moss and couldn't deal with throwing it out.  It is a good way to get rid of it.  I dampen it first then plug the drainage holes.
