Killer Strom Introduces Spring

Our Town was devistated. Heavy rain and 75mph wind March 11, 12 and 13th did us in. on the 13th, 27,955 homes were were plunged into darkness. No electricty, heat or land phone service.  Those with cell phones that needed a charge were out. I was without any utilitys or phone for 6 days. 140 utility poles were down and smashed. Most roads were blocked by huge downed trees and wires. One woman who walked outside was killed by a falling tree. When I could get out I spent 3 nights in a RedCross shelter. The weather was cold. I was frozen and hungry. Whole Foods Market had their roof blown off as well as the front of the building collapsed. My power and phone weren't restored until the 19th. I spent all that day washing out freezers and refridgs and throwing out spoiled food and emptying coolers of more spoiled food. Help came from Canada and Ohio and PA to help restore utilities and clear roads.

My rooted Fig cuttings in the house died of cold. On Friday the outside temp. shot up to 65* but I still needed heat to warm up the house that had gotten so cold. Yesterday it hit 70* to celebrate Spring.

Peg,

Did you have damage to the house?

C.J.

Peg,
we had some damage around us as well, but you had it really bad. Luckily we didn't lose power.
Let me know how I can help you.

I live on Long Island.  Yes that was a bad storm.  I was out of power for 4 days.  Let me know if you want any cuttings or small transplants, you got  'em

To Ed and all of you who posted here and sent private messages some that I haven't responded to yet, many, many thanks for your genorosity and kindness. All I can say is, this is a terrific Fig Family!

Thankfully I had no major health emergency and minor property damage, lots of clean up. Unfortunately I can't handle another fig at this time. I'm dead tired and too many other things have happened that are still pending. I'd love to say, just one more, but I won't.

The last 3 days have been lovely weather wise, 70* on Sat. I moved about half of my mature trees that were leafing out already out of the garage and into the sunshine and gave them some water. Wouldn't you know it is now pouring raining again! And thunder and lightening to boot! LOL

I've resolved not to worry about it. What will happen will happen.

To all Guys and Gals, thanks again.

Peg

Well Peg i hope the bad weather is over for you and perhaps the fig gods are giving you somethng good with rain for your figs which normally has a PH around 7.0 or high 6s which fig plants like and no chlorine, i also heard but cannot prove it that somehow lightining has a positive effect on plants.
So hope things go well and you soon can sit back and look at your plants , smell them enjoy them and finally get to taste some wonderful fruit.
Remember when the going gets rough there are some that are always willing to help you out.
Too bad we are not neighbors.
