I was working out in the fig grove today and I kept hearing a knocking sound and didn't know where it was coming from and then I looked over at my panachee and low and behold it was Woody the Woodpecker , Does anyone know if you could eat a woodpecker?
Dave, Dave, Dave's Not Here...LOL (Cheech & Chong)
One would think that Woody would be a positive thing for your tree, right? it's a beautiful bird and not after your figs!
Land Shark....
It doesn't matter who eats it, you need to get it out of that tree. Try renting a cat or a snake.
I thought woodpeckers pecked to reach burrowing bugs...
Those woodpeckers are good eatin', but they're a little hairy. (Rimshot!)
Male Downy Woodpecker. An inexpensive way to divert him is a suet feeder somewhere nearby. Cool shots. Hope you don't get visited by Sapsuckers.
sweet bird. Nice picture. I have a little thing running in my garden, my daughter thinks it is a chinchila. I think is a pygmy rabbit, it is tiny. So far, I don't see any damage on my trees, there is plenty of food in my garden.
Hi Dave,Was that bird after your tree or after the windows behind ... Put a cloth upon the window for some days. The window is acting as a mirror and that bird is fighting his own reflection. He knocks to tell the reflection to move away ... And that is not going to happen before you put a store or a cloth on the window ...or put a shadow of a bird of prey in the middle of the window . You can cut one in cardboard or paper. The little one will move away .By the way, nice pic !
If there's a woodpecker there's probably a bug in the tree. Not always, but look carefully for borer holes. Some woodpeckers are protected, so I'd advise not harming it.
I have about 4 different types of woodpeckers from the giant Pileated to the small Downy and they just prefer the Granddaddy Oaks, they pay no attention to the fig trees. Lucky I guess, but the squirrels and black birds make up for them.
Sometimes, woodpeckers rattle on things (trees, chimneys) to mark territory as well. My first guess would be searching for food...
I've heard them here, but never seen one. They seem to like the big pine trees. Hope he never returns to your Panachee! Nice looking tree!Suzi
He's back today and I don't think he likes Panachee figs he went for the Italian honey Check out the holes in the fig he went across it like an M-16
Put out a feeder with black oil sunflower seeds. That may draw him away from you trees. They are protected so be forewarned. Suet will go rancid in warm weather. I don't usually have it out until the temps drop to the 40's. The birds are swarming around our feeder and I wonder if they don't know what is in store this upcoming winter... And I agree with Ampersand.
