Kudos to Giuseppe Morle/standards for vendors

For the past couple of months I've been collecting fig varieties for trial at our nascent urban agroforestry project here in Albuquerque. I hope that reports of positive experiences with vendors don't violate the rules of the forum, but I just wanted to say that after a miserable set of experiences with vendors who sell barely rooted cuttings in gallon pots or plants in poor condition, careless handling and packing, etc. it was an absolute revelation to receive some plants from Giuseppe at figtrees.net. it would be great if he could give an online tutorial here on packing and shipping plants - they do the best job I've ever seen, and the figs, which were large and extremely healthy, were in near perfect condition despite their long hot journey from Boston.  Giuseppe will also spend lots of time on the phone talking about a subject he is clearly dedicated to - the cultivation of figs and particularly varieties from Italy.

We're still looking for cuttings of by the way, if anybody wold like to help us now or in the fall once trees are dormant. Thanks very much to the folks who've already sent us some - they've been very helpful. Please email me to find out what we have and don't have...

JoeF..  As to packing of fig trees in one to three gallon pots, it would be difficult to better Durio Nursery in La.
I can say, that Dalton knows and is very concerned about his shipments and condition, when received.  Just adding my "two cents". Fred

thanks for the suggestion, Fred. Duiro has several varieties that I'd like to try, so I'll give them a shot. I assume that you've found they're plants to be pretty well established in their gallon pots?

If anyone has any suggestions as to varieties on their list that would (or might) do particularly well here in NM, let me know.

Joe

JoeF...
I live on coast of N.C. ,zone 7 , and only plant in-ground , no pots. So, I would be afraid to suggest any figs for your area.
I recently received two new varieties from Durio Nursery.. LSU-Gold and a Beer's Black (Negronne). Both were well rooted in their containers. I always hose the soil off of most, so I can check for root nematodes, then, I plant in my yard, and can say no problems and definately not just sticks with undeveloped root system.
Email Dalton and tell him what you are looking for. He will certainly help you !   Now, I'm going fishing !   Good Luck,  Fred

I bought a Paradiso from Joe Morle and was duly impressed with his careful packing.  The tree was packed so that the pot could not move in the carton, nor could any of the soil fall out of the pot had it been turned on its head (as often happens in shipping).

Took me five minutes to unpack the tree, and I studied every move Joe had made in packing it.  Hard to duplicate when you are using boxes gathered behind the grocery store, or cut from a refrigerator box, but it can be done.

If you ship in gallon pots I believe you can ship a tree, packed in the manner Joe uses and using recycled boxes, anywhere in the US for fifteen bucks or less.  They guy is good, and a pleasure to deal with.
