L.S.U. gold Hardy?

My Lsu gold seems hardier than my Chicago hardy. C/H froze the ground and Lsu gold survive 60%.It has a lot of fruits, C/h very little on new growth. DSC02243.jpg

Where are you located?

N/W Arkansas.

Really?  I planted couple young Tiny fig trees together last year, I am at Zone8B, Fig trees got killed by windchill cold, all trees cold killed to base, Only 2 Hardy Chicago are half cold killed, and it grows new branches with many figs now.

I have a small LSU gold in pot, in our cool summer area, It seems very high productive, I am thinking to plant them in ground. However, I am worry about that that its fruits need high heat( Bland taste), Let me know your figs taste please.

You have to remember that last fall we got a very early hard freeze and my tree's were not winter hardy yet. Normally my winters are not that severe to hurt Chicago Hardy.

Wow. Very impressed. Does the chicken wire help with birds and squirrels??

chickenwire is for deer problem and armadillo's. Even though i live in the Ozarks squirls are not a problem, raccoons and possums are. I haven't seen a squirl in 3 months, cause i make it miserable for them year around. My fenced area's are full of subtropicals too.

How do you make squirrels miserable?

Squirls eat my stuff my dog go after them, catches some than run some in nearby tree's all the way to the top loose their balance, fall down, dog is waiting will grab squirl. No help from me,honest! IMG_0159_edited-1.jpg

Nice catch.
I saw squirls eating my figs , I quickly harvest all figs on tree

Hey Luak, you are right. LSU research reports cold hardiness of mature trees ( going dormant on schedule) in order of these 3
1- Celeste
2- LSU Gold
3- Hardly Chicago
I've read that the new owner of the house in Chicago called someone for help to protect the fig tree from winter. I think it was Fred Born who came to show him how to insulate the older tree as the previous owner had been doing for years. It's a great fig. Of course not from Chicago.. love your dog..
Ricky I think your cool summers might give you a mediocre tasting LSU gold
But you could cook them with sugar( 1 gallon fig- 2 to 4 cups sugar) enjoy all winter

I think that picture was the first legit reason to buy a small dog lol. My German Shepard hadn't caught any squirrels but he has knocked over several plants trying lol

Ricky - Those interior pictures are not LSU Gold.  LSU Gold is far better if allowed to fully ripen to brown spot stage.  If your growing season is not long enough to fully ripen you would be better off replacing it with a fig more suited to your area.  Just stating my opinion.

Heres a pic of my lsu gold and probably could have stayed
the tree another day . This fig tree needs 3+ years before
taste appeal.

Somehow, a bucket of green figs just looks wrong :-(
It's not like they're going to ripen any more now.  Such potential - lost!

I live in the Ozarks have plenty of unwanted creatures but people in this area are help n-out. One friend told me sofar he got rid off 71 squirls this year and he is not the only one.
I would not worry about one, they really don't like ripe figs, they prefer plums and that sort of things. My L.S.U gold got to go a couple of weeks. Negronne done, Smith almost done, maybe 2 more weeks. These 2 were very good, Smith has a tougher skin.
