Label your figs

I have some labels like that but was going to put them on the tree itself. I like your idea of drilling a hole in the pot and threading it through that way.

Having had some issues with keeping things straight when I first started rooting cuttings 3 years ago, this is how I now label my figs.

When I first receive cuttings the first thing I do is go the my inventory sheet and add a new number for this fig.  I number the first one (example 223-1) If I have more than one cutting of the same fig, the second one would be (223-2) and so on. This number will follow this cutting all of it's life, no other plant will ever have this number. My next step is to write this number on the cutting with a white paint marker.

When I move it to a baggie to root, I put the number and name and date on the baggie. Once rooted and I move it to an inverted cup, this number, name, and date of the move is written on the cup.

When I move it up to a 1 gallon pot, again I write the number, name, and date of the move on the pot.

Once the tree is well established and I'm ready to plant it in the ground it or give it to someone, I put an aluminum tag on it.

The writing on the one gallon pot can be remove with a solvent and the pot used again.

Thanks Tom for sharing the video.
Nice to see the person who took care of the baby bird and who shreaked when the bat flew out and your many other video's.    ; )

Nice.
Now about this OCD thing, LOL.

Seriously, I like the plan, I have a pot full of healthy cuttings that are labeled "unknown" primarily because they were cuttings that somehow got separated from the original pot, which I had labeled with a tag attached to the pot.  The paint marker idea is great.

This is why I read the posts, all of them.

Tom, my apologies. I posted my method on your thread and I didn't even acknowledge what you've done. The videos you give us are great and I really enjoy them and your info is precise and very good.
Sorry,

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the videos.  Can you tell me where you bought those labels and/or who manufactures them.

Thanks,

Alex

Found these last night same price as the smaller ones these are twice as tall

Hi
good video and good ideas
the only thing I would add is you don't have to buy the aluminum label
you can look for old aluminum window shades one shade will last you a very long time
cut them with scissors the length you want, they already have holes at either end or punch a hole in it
with a punch or screwdriver (do not drill unless you're wearing gloves in case the drillbit catches it and spins it) and as the gentleman on the video, write on it with a ballpoint pen drill a hole in the pot and I tie
the label with a plastic tie strap. if you uppot cut the tie and move to new pot.

Nice video Tom. I've used those impresso labels for years. Placing a tag on the pot is a good idea. Although, I don't do that, I use 2 size zip ties per tag. One for the tag and a larger one for the tree. They last forever. I sometimes double label my trees b/c squirrels have been known to knibble on my tags. I also place a label inside the pot covered with dirt and mulch.
