Lampeira Prusch and Lampeira Branca

As some of you know, I love the figs from my Lampeira Prusch. Hoping to find out if it is the same fig as Lampeira Branca, I sent photos to Lampo, our friend and expert in Portugal. He said that he did not recognize it, and that it was not L Branca. Now that my L Branca has ripened its first figs, I can compare them side by side, which I did today. The larger fig in the pics, with more red in the center, is L Prusch. The L Branca is more honey tasting with hints of melon?, caramel?, not sure. Very sweet and flavorful. Both produced a honey drop. Here are photos.

Which one do you prefer? The smaller one looks more sweet and tasty. Very ripe figs you have. I have to say out of 50 figs this year. Mine are all dull tasting from the continued rain we have. Never stops. But very nice pics.

Nice, Gary, thanks for sharing!

Richie.... today, the L Branca stood out more, because, as you say, it was sweeter. Both were great. The L Prusch brebas are crazy good also. As a reminder, here is a pic of the L Prusch brebas, from July 13, 2015.
Harvey, you're welcome!

Very nice!! I like your description, Gary..."crazy good"!

Two beautiful figs! Thank you for sharing Gary! Do you have the fig wasp in your area?

Not yet, Leon, but they are not far away.

Great comparison pics Gary.  I can only imagine how good that Lampeira prusch tastes....

Actually, the Lampeira cutting I sent you was from Prusch... At the time I assumed it was the Branca but Gary has just demonstrated it's not the same fig. So you might not having to just imagine the Lampeira Prusch flavor as long as you think...

Beautiful

Very nice GAry!
Not clar if you are saying the L. branca a common type fig?

Yes Pino, I believe L Branca is a common fig.

Gary,

Another Portuguese forum member in f4f   ( rosa_dias  ) could well bring in some clarification.
Among various other family orchards this lady owns and runs a fig farm in the southern District with a few hundred grown up trees, ,  the majority being the genuine local cultivar -Lampeira Branca-. More details in her page ...

Under the current Port. terminology for fig types, Lampa Branca is a 'Cachopeiro' fig, this meaning two yearly crops - breba and main crop - without any need for caprification.

Thank you, Francisco.
Rosas farm and fig orchard look quite beautiful. I will send her a message.
Gary

I may have caused some confusion about the Prusch strain some time ago.  A few years ago Pete in NC brought up how Lampeira was a San Pedro type fig and that the fig from Prusch did not fit that and then it became apparent that Lampeira Preta was the San Pedro fig he was talking about so I (incorrectly) assumed that the fig at Prusch Park must be the Lampeira Branca.  Instead, it seems to be something entirely different.  I don't know the original source of the tree at Prusch and I wonder now if it's something entirely different.  Best to call it Lampeira (Prusch) I guess.
